Herbert “Gene” Autrey Harper, age 83, passed away Friday, February 10, 2023 at the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock.

Mr. Harper was born in Buncombe County to the late Clyde and Helen Sharpe Harper.

Gene was a 1957 graduate of A.C. Reynolds High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of Grassy Branch Baptist Church and he enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, music and singing and even wrote a few gospel songs.

Gene is survived by his wife, Peggy Bryson Harper; a son, Kevin Harper (Tracy); a daughter, Deanna Harper Sims (Kent); step-son, Thomas G. Pinkerton, Jr. (Kim); step-daughter, Lisa A. Peluso; a brother, Bob Harper; a sister, Vickie Vila; five grandchildren, Cole Harper (Sara), Lennox Pinkerton, Griffin Harper, Lucy Sims, Sabrea Pinkerton and two great grandchildren, Jude Harper and Sandy Mae Harper.

A funeral service will be held on Monday, February 13, 2023 at 1:00 pm at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.

Burial will follow at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory.

  1. Our condolences for your loss. Gene was a unique boss and a great friend to work for and with. Rest in Peace Gene.

  2. My prayers are with you Peggy and all of the family. I remember Gene when I was young when he worked at the A & P on Biltmore Ave. as we went there on Saturday’s. God give you comfort and be with you everyday my dear friend from Grassy Branch Church as we grew up there.
