James Hugh Wingo, 81, passed away Monday, April 24, 2000, at Memorial Mission Hospital.

A native of Asheville, he was the son of the late Ike and Nell Blair Wingo. He was also preceded in death by his daughter Angela and his sister Mary Nell Smith.

He was a 1936 graduate of Lee H. Edward High School and served as an Army sergeant in the European theater in northern France during WW II. He retired as a conductor with Southern Railway after 40 years of service and more recently operated the miniature train at the Buncombe County Recreation Park for a number of years.

He was a member and Deacon of Reed Memorial Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Peggy Sexton Wingo; two sons James Wingo II, and Toby DeVore and his wife Sandra of Asheville; one daughter Elizabeth Bartlett and her husband Wayne of Black Mountain; two granddaughters, Emily Catherine Wingo and Elizabeth DeVore Ray; three grandsons, Michael DeVore, Nicholas DeVore and Daniel DeVore; two great-granddaughters, Kayla and Tyla DeVore, all of Asheville; and one sister, Betty Wingo Fisher of Charlotte.

Graveside services will be 2:00 pm Thursday at Pisgah View Memorial Park with the Rev. Randy Melton officiating.

His family will receive friends from 7 - 8:30 pm Wednesday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue.
