James Monroe Shepherd

James M. Shepherd, 77, of 2 East Ridge Court, Fairview,
died Tuesday, January 5, 1999 at his residence.

A native of Buncombe County, he was the son of the late
Luther V. and Bessie Leona Rice Shepherd and was also
preceded in death by two children, Larry and Sherri
Shepherd.  He was a retired E-7 with the U.S. Army, serving
in W.W. II and Viet Nam.  He also was retired from Taylor
Instruments.

He is survived by his wife, Bernydene Warren Shepherd;
daughter, Janet Shepherd Brown of Fairview; three sons, Jim
Shepherd of Black Mountain, Tim Shepherd of Fairview,
Steven Shepherd of the home; two sisters, Ruth Grant of
Black Mountain, Frances Elkins of Asheville; four
grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be held at 2 pm Friday in the chapel of Groce
Funeral Home on Patton Avenue, conducted by the Rev.
Ashley Crowder-Stanley and the Rev. Darryl Searcy.

Interment will be in Green Hills Cemetery.  Military graveside
rites will be conducted by the Enka High School Air Force
ROTC unit.

The family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 pm
Thursday at the funeral home.
