James Whitmire Chandler, 83, of Asheville, passed away on Wednesday, January 31, 2018 at Emerald Ridge Rehab & Care Center. Born in Buncombe County to the late Bascombe and Devona Jones Chandler, he retired from the Maintenance Department at Charles George VA Medical Center and was a member of Berea Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by brothers, George and Jerry Chandler, and sister, Ida Pressley. Survivors include son, Alan Michael Chandler; daughter, Sharon Chandler; one granddaughter; brother, Glenn Chandler; sisters, Betty Grant, Allie Bogan and Peggy Morris, and many nephews and nieces. A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. in the Tunnel Road chapel of Groce Funeral Home. Rev. James Lamb will officiate and interment will follow at Sky View Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to JFK Hospice, P.O. Box 25338, Asheville, NC, 28813, or to Berea Baptist Church, 2578 Riceville Rd., Asheville, NC, 28805.
