Asheville Butterfly TrailMrs. Smathers was born May 26, 1900, in Buncombe County and was a daughter of the late James and Zennie Fletcher Netherton. She was married to Hack A. Smathers who died in 1956. She was a practical nurse in nursing homes and residential service and was a member of Brown’s View United Methodist Church.
She is survived by a son, Homer Smathers of Candler; two daughters, Genevieve Capps of Asheville and Helen Brown of Ocean City, MD; one half-sister, Savannah Smith of Candler; ten grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 2:00 pm Wednesday at Brown’s View United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Robert E. Harris officiating. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is in charge of the arrangements.
