James Russell "Jim" Cole, Jr., 68, of Asheville, died on Wednesday, September 11, 2013. A native of Buncombe Co., Mr. Cole was a son of the late James Russell, Sr., and Lois Cox Cole. Mr. Cole owned and operated J. Cole Construction Co. He had also worked for Buncombe Construction Co. and H&M Construction. In his free-time, Mr. Cole loved playing softball. He played on numerous teams in North and South Carolina, won two state championships, and one USSSA World Championship with Loftis Softball. He also loved the mountains of Western North Carolina, and listening to music. Mr. Cole is survived by his wife, Jane Fernando Cole; son, Rusty Cole and his wife Carrie, of Mars Hill; step-daughter, Melissa Kucin, of Asheville; sister, Sandra Henderson, of Raleigh; niece, Jaymie Eichorn and her husband Jamie, of Greensboro, NC; and grandchildren, Megan and James Cole. and Savannah Schleiden. Jim's family will celebrate his life at his home at 843 West Point Drive, Asheville, 28806 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 14. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting his family.

  5. I am sad to hear of the passing of another one of the world’s really good men,helpful,others oriented and accomplished. Perhaps 25 years ago Jim took the trouble to find the solution I needed for a building in Canton I owned and I have never forgot the name or the deed,lucky to have been touched by his work. Bill

  14. Rusty, your dad and I go way way back. Never were close personal friends, but played softball against each other for years. Even had opportunity to play over 40 once with him. So sorry, will miss him. God bless your family.

    I was traveling over the weekend and heard of Jim’s passing Tuesday. I’m very sad and sorry for your loss. I always admired and looked up to Jim.

  20. I recently heard that Jim passed away– I was so sad to hear this news. I spent some time with him a few years back and I really enjoyed his company and family. He was genuine, smart and funny too & always welcomed me into his home. I hope you have found some peace Jane Savannah and Lisa (and the rest of the family). I know that each day brings it’s challenges but I know too that some day you will smile before you cry when you think of Jim and
    know that he is with you. May this lovely man rest in peace.
