Asheville ~ Dr. John Christian Ransmeier, 91, of Lady Huntington Lane, Givens Estates, died Monday, January 19, 2004 at Givens Estates Health Care Center. Dr. Ransmeier was born May 24, 1912 in New Orleans, LA and was the son of the late John Christian Ransmeier, Sr. and Viola Sirera Ransmeier. He was a graduate of Harvard University and the University of Chicago School of Medicine. He interned at Johns Hopkins University Hospital and was a resident at Vanderbilt University Hospital. During World War II he entered the Army Medical Corps and served with the Vanderbilt unit in N. Africa and Italy. He was a physician of internal medicine in Alexandria, VA, and from 1963 until his retirement, he worked at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Oteen, NC. He enjoyed writing poetry and his poems were published in numerous small journals. In 1991 he published a collection of his poems entitled "Now Is A Long Time". He was a member of Skyland United Methodist Church in Skyland, NC. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Frances Starnes Ransmeier of Asheville; a daughter, Ellen Ransmeier Boyd and her husband Richard of Dillsboro; two sons, Joseph Ransmeier of Asheville, and John Ransmeier and wife Anne Marie of Weaverville; a daughter-in-law, Mary Lee Ransmeier of Roanoke Rapids, NC; one brother, Joseph S. Ransmeier and his wife Margaret of Hopkinton, NH; four grandchildren, Melanie, Leon, Siler and Megan Ransmeier. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 2:00 PM at Skyland United Methodist Church with the Rev. Arnold Corriher officiating. The family will greet friends one hour prior to the service. Private interment will be at Riverside Cemetery. Memorials may be made to ABCCM Medical Ministry, 155 Livingston St. Asheville, NC 28801.
