Asheville – Julia Dowell Brotherton, 89, of Asheville, died Wednesday, March 26, 2025 at CarePartners Solace Center.
A native of Iredell County, NC, she was a daughter of the late Thomas and Thelma Redmond Dowell. Julia was also preceded in death by her husband, James R. Brotherton, Sr. as well as a son, James R. Brotherton, Jr.
She loved spending time in the mountains, especially in Eastern Tennessee. She so enjoyed going to Pigeon Forge to shop and go to Dollywood with her granddaughters. They were the light of her life and she relished the time spent with them. In her down time, she loved to eat out at different restaurants, read books and especially put jigsaw puzzles together. Even though not able to attend much, her church family was very important to her. She always wanted to be in Sunday School to learn the word of God and fellowship with her classmates.
She is survived by two sons, Douglas Alan Brotherton and Thomas Charles Brotherton; one sister, Jean Dowell; two granddaughters, Sarah Cimino and Michelle Wittkop; four great-grandchildren, Olive, Elizabeth, RJ and Quinn as well as a niece, Jeanne Gaither.

Thank you, Dennie and Linda. It was hard losing Julia for all of us. I will miss her!
Go Vols!
Thank you, Brenda. I wish Julia would have known you, your parents and grandparents.
Frank and I enjoyed knowing Julia and sharing good memories and fun times with her. I loved being in Sunday School with Julia. She was so intent on understanding the meanings of various scripture and enjoyed sharing her interpretation and learning others understanding of what was being studied. I enjoyed talking to Julia on the phone – lots of laughs and shared opinions – an hour was gone before we knew it. We were blessed to have Julia as a friend and we know we will enjoy time eternal one day.
My prayers are with all the family.
Dear Family of Julia Brotherton, I appreciated the kindness, love of God and friendship Julia always showed me and others. She was a treasure to all of us. I will miss her so very much! You have my deepest sympathy on her passing.
