Asheville~ Julius Duncan Hays, 78, of Asheville, passed away on Saturday, April 6, 2013. Born in Apex, NC, on July 13, 1934, Duncan lived in Durham and Lumberton before moving to Asheville in 1986. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Hays of Durham and his brother, Robert S. Hays, Jr. also of Durham. Duncan is survived by his wife of 46 years, Jayne Hamlet Hays; his daughter, Virginia Elizabeth Hays, his grandson, Jared Duncan Hays, all of Asheville; as well as his sisters, Laura Frazier of Salisbury and Marion McNair of Pinehurst. He graduated from Sewanee Military Academy and attended Campbell University and UNC Chapel Hill. Duncan loved life, his family, his friends and his animals, especially his Arabian horses. He was a golfer, a hunter and UNC Rams Club member for over 35 years. A celebration of Duncan's life will be held on Saturday, April 13, at 1:00 PM at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian, 72 Long Shoals Road, Arden, NC. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: Hope for Horses, PO Box 1449, Leicester, NC 28748; Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, 38 Glendale Ave., Asheville, NC 28803 or to a charity of one's choice. Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian is assisting the family.

  1. Our hearts go out to your family at this time of sorrow. Duncan’s suffering is over but I know you all miss him terribly. Ike and Bey will be looking for him every day I am sure but all of you will see him again someday. Though we only knew Duncan for a few years we were very fond of him and found him to be a true southern gentleman.In sympathy the Angel Family
