On June 5, 2022 Kathleen Magee Laine was reunited with her husband and the love of her life, Edward F. Laine. Kathleen (also known with much affection as “Mumma”) was born in the small eastern Virginia town of Waverly in 1934. The life that Kathleen lived can be summed up in three words. Beauty, Brilliance, and Creativity. All who knew and loved her, were familiar with her remarkable gift of creativity and her eye for all things extraordinary and of beauty.

For many years she was an award-winning hair style innovator in the Norfolk, Petersburg, and Richmond areas of Virginia. She filled many shelves with trophies and awards for her designs. Later, she operated an interior design business with several locations in the tidewater area of Virginia, as well as in western North Carolina. Her talent for design, eye for detail and the ability to convert the mundane into extraordinary were much sought after during her long career. She loved to share her amazing talents and gifts with her family and friends. The items that Kathleen produced with patience, diligence and love are more precious than gold to all that now have them.

She was a lady of vision. She sought the best of life and enjoyed every moment to the fullest. She was the anchor and cornerstone of a large family that loves her dearly.

As everyone knows, she loved her dear dog, Layla and took her everywhere she went. Layla is missing her lap to sit on.

Kathleen was preceded in death by her father, Richard Lee Magee and her mother Eva Clark Magee of Waverly, Virginia. Her sister Doris Otto of Vero Beach, Florida. She is survived by her sister Frances Byrum of Waverly, Virginia.

She is survived by her son Herman T. Burgess, Jr of Petersburg, Virginia. Her Daughter Kathy Ann Burgess of Chester, Virginia. Her Son Richard M. Burgess and wife Kathleen of Chesterfield, Virginia. Her daughter Victoria S. Shuler and husband Gregory S. Shuler of Canton, North Carolina. Her daughter Patience S. Earley of Asheville, North Carolina. Her son Nelson Laine and wife Amy of Wakefield, Virginia. Her son-in-law Robin G. Earley of Candler, North Carolina.

Kathleen was blessed with many grandchildren. Dayne S. Shuler, Colton W. Shuler, Brayden C. Shuler, Abigail V. Earley, Ryan M. Burgess, Zachary T. Burgess, Jennifer L. Ryan, Annalia Swigert, Nelson C. Laine, Jr. and Morgan Laine. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A funeral service will be held June 10th, 2022 at the Wakefield United Methodist Church. There will be a visitation to receive family and friends at 10am prior to the service that will begin at 11am.
