LAWRENCE E. NOTESTINE After a short illness, Lawrence Edward Notestine, 97, died peacefully at St. Joseph Campus, Mission Hospital, on Wednesday, February 11, 2009. He was born Marsh 2, 2911, in Joplin, MO, the tenth child of the late James Edward and Mary Frances Black Notestine. He had lived in Asheville since 1963 and he was a member of Faith Community Church in Black Mountain. He loved the members of that church as members of his own family. Mr. Notestine was retired from the Quaker Oats Company and he was an avid bowler. As with his church family, he cherished the many friends he had among area bowlers, and he always valued the time he shared with them. Preceding him in death were his parents, his brothers and sister, and one grandchild. Left to mourn his passing are his wife of 66 years, Goldie Davis Notestine; his daughter, Mary Stanart and her husband, Jim, of Oklahoma City, OK; his son, Larry and his wife, Patricia, of Knoxville, TN; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews and their families. Visitation will be at 1:00 p.m. Saturday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with services following at 2:00 p.m. Private graveside services will be Sunday at Cummingsville Methodist Church Cemetery, Cummingsville, TN. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gideon's International, Asheville-Buncombe Christian Community Ministries, or to a charity of your choice.

  11. Paw Paw, We just finished signing your birthday card when we got the sad news. The card read as follows:
I’m Thankful God brought us together as Friends (Amen)
We believe that God puts certain people in our lives for a reason. Sometimes it is to help us learn, sometimes it is to encourage us, or strengthen our faith. But whatever purpose God had in bringing us together, we are just thankful he did….for you have been such a source of joy and inspiration in our life, and it means more to us than we could ever say to have the gift of your friendship and caring.

We will miss you but know you are with Him now and what a mansion you must live in.

  12. Kathy, Jan, and I are saddened to hear about the loss of Mr. Notestine. He was a great neighbor. We will miss seeing him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

  13. Lawrence was one of the finest persons I have ever known. His daily cryptoquote was truly a gift each day. On Jan 17th he ended by stating ‘ No matter how big of a hurry I get in I never forget how much I love you, each and everyone for being a
cherished friend ‘. His love for
others was just as directed by the
Holy Spirit we worship. He will be missed but not forgotten.
    Love
    Ernie and Ellen
