Lenoir B. Moore, Jr., 84, passed away Saturday, February 27, 2021 after a brief battle with cancer. A native of Asheville and son of the late Mrs. Samuel E. Beck (Lena Clark) and the late L.B.Moore, Sr. At a young age Lenoir developed a love of fast cars. He was a winning racer at the Chimney Rock Hill Climb and a founding member of the Custom Toppers Auto Club. He shared his passion for fast cars with several local friends at a drag racetrack that they developed on the old Asheville Hendersonville Airport property at Mills Gap in Cane Creek. They used the former runway for racing and the control tower for the race announcer and the race timing equipment. It drew quite the crowd in the 1960’s. Lenoir went on to retire from the Northwestern Bank and renewed his passion for collecting and selling cars throughout his life.
He was preceded in death by his wife Cynthia W. Moore. He is survived by three daughters, three son-in-laws and their families, Tina M. Silvers (David) of Weaverville grandchildren Andy, Brad and Casey, Terry M. Ellington (Douglas) of Asheville grandchildren Sam and Laura and Tanya M. Schaub (Joel) of Asheville and Mill Spring grandson Alex. A sister, Gail M. Whitaker of Asheville (her daughters Nancy, Jan and Chrissy), a brother Lynn Moore of St. Petersburg, FL., numerous grand and great grand children, nieces and nephews and several wonderful cousins. Lenoir was a member of the Beverly Hills Baptist Church and had missed being able to attend with the Covid restrictions. He loved his time spent in Florida, he loved gospel music, and his family. He too, was loved and he will be missed.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, March 6 at Green Hills Cemetery in Asheville. The Reverend Dr. William “Billy” King will officiate. In lieu of flowers, the family hopes that you will consider a donation in memory of Lenoir, to Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, PO Box 8195, Asheville, NC 28814 or on their website at bwar.org.
