Lewis Ervin Laney, Sr., 86, of Candler, died on Thursday, August 11, 2011, at his home. A native of Bryson City, Mr. Laney was a son of the late John Ervin and Eliza Vick Laney. He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Clontz; two siblings; and a grandchild. Mr. Laney had retired from the Biltmore Estate where he worked as a groundskeeper. He loved to work in his garden, and also enjoyed deep sea fishing. Mr. Laney was a well-decorated World War II veteran, earning two Bronze Stars, and two Purple Hearts for his service. Mr. Laney is survived by his wife, Elva Mae Wynes Laney; daughters, Reva Waldrup and husband Charles, Shirley Gaylord and husband Gene, Martha Edwards and husband Bruce, Loretta Griffin and husband Charles, and Brenda Parton; sons, Lewis Laney, Jr., and wife Sandra, and Ervin Laney and wife Sharon; sisters Nellie Trull and Della Mahaffey; brother, Oscar Laney; 16 grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, and nine great-great-grandchildren. A funeral service for Mr. Laney will be on Sunday evening at 5:00 p.m. at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. with the Rev. Charles Griffin officiating. His family will receive friends an hour prior to the service starting at 4:00 p.m. Interment will take place on Monday morning at 10:00 a.m. at Forest Lawn Memorial Park with military honors performed by the North Carolina Honor Guard. Mr. Laney's family wishes to thank the Harbor Inn, Shoney's, the WNC Farmer's Market, and Jack Young's Nursery for their kindness and friendship.
