Lillian Vernelle Haynes Messer, 90 years old, of Candler, died Sunday, January 12, 2014, at Mission Hospitals. Born December 11, 1923 in Madison Co., she was a daughter of the late Harley E. Haynes and Virginia Lowe Haynes. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Herman Henry Messer, sisters Evelyn Davis, Naomi Waddell and Cleo Haynes, and brothers Joe, Clayton, and Franklin Haynes. Mrs. Messer was a graduate of Fines Creek High School, and retired from the Bank of Asheville after 22 years of service. She was a faithful member of Acton United Methodist Church, where she had attended since 1942, and served in many capacities. She loved being outdoors and working in her beautiful flower garden. She enjoyed cooking, and was a talented seamstress and craftswoman. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother, and her greatest joy was her family. Mrs. Messer is survived by her daughter, Linda Clements and husband Bob of Buford, GA; grandchildren Brad Clements and fiancee Michelle Salmon of Buford, GA, and Kelly Snow and husband Josh of Lawrenceville, GA; sister Yvonne Hannah of Huntersville, NC; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Acton United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Warren N. Owens officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday in the Acton United Methodist Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Acton United Methodist Church, 171 Sand Hill School Rd., Asheville, NC 28806. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family.
