Linda M. (Waddell) Erwin, 77, of Arden, died Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at Mission Hospital. Born in Greenville, TN, she was the wife of Oliver Erwin of Arden, and the daughter of the late Walter Woodrow and Ida Mae (Shenault) Waddell. She was also preceded in death by a brother, James David Waddell. Linda was a member of Skyland United Methodist Church. She was a beloved teacher and began her teaching career in Bristol and Bedford, Virginia. She moved to Asheville in 1969 and taught at Valley Springs Elementary School. Linda taught fifth and sixth grades at Glen Arden and Valley Springs for 15 years before becoming curriculum specialist for Buncombe County Schools in 1984. As curriculum specialist, Linda supported teachers and students through classroom visits, workshops and individual planning. Linda was a member and active participant in professional organizations, including NEA, NCAE, and Kappa Kappa Iota. Linda retired after 36 years in public education. She was a distinguished educator, respected and loved by both students and teachers. She leaves a legacy of excellence, compassion and empathy. In addition to her husband of 35 years, she is survived by a brother, John Waddell of Knoxville, TN and a sister, Betty Sams and her husband Gerald of Fletcher; and several nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, January 19, 2019 at Skyland United Methodist Church with Rev. Joy Moss officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to SUMC Welcome Table, PO Box 697, Skyland, NC 28776.

    I am so very sorry for you loss. Linda was a real joy to know and take care of. Daddy always spoke very highly of both of you. Please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

    You are in our thoughts and prayers. It came as a shock to both of us. Linda was Buddy’s 6th grade teacher. Under weather this week but I’ll see and talk with you later to see if I can do anything to help.

  6. I am one of those students who respected,admired, and loved her. She was one of my teachers in sixth grade at Glen Arden. I was later fortunate enough to work with her professionally when I became a teacher myself in Buncombe County. She will be missed by many. Her family will be in my prayers during these difficult days ahead.

  14. My sincere condolences to the Erwin and Waddell family. I grew up with Linda at Hermon Methodist Church, Afton, Tenn. We enjoyed many happy times in the church as part of the teenage girls quartet, Sunday School, and Bible School. She was always a joy to be with, admired, very smart, and kind. Our lives took different paths away from home but she will always be remembered. May God keep you and Bless you.
