Lucille Vera Foster Mills, 90, of Asheville, passed peacefully into Heaven Sunday, January 25, 2009, at the Universal Health Care Center in Fletcher surrounded in her final hours by her loving and devoted family.
Mrs. Mills will be remembered by all fortunate enough to have known her as a very caring person. She was called upon many times during her lifetime to care for an ailing family member. As a young woman, she provided 24 hour attendance to her ailing paternal grandmother. During the years of her marriage, her husband served his country in the Armed Forces which put Mrs. Mills in the position of single parent for two young girls. She was a loving daughter, attending to her father in his elder years. As a private duty in-home care provider, caring for others was her profession, too.
Mrs. Mills enjoyed varied hobbies and interests including cooking, keeping up with current events and puzzle books. Her true love was spending time with her grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. She will be missed at Universal Health Care Center where she resided for the past three years and made many friends.
A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, Mrs. Mills was born on August 31, 1918 to the late James Edward Foster and Altha Cogburn Foster. She was also preceded in death by a daughter, Carole Jean Mills, two brothers, Howard Foster and Junius Foster and four sisters, Nell Foster Sorrells , Glynnis Foster Lockhart, Edna Foster Byrd and Carolyn Foster Stuman.
Mrs. Mills is survived by one daughter, Mary Francis Basso and her husband Olindo of Iron Mountain, MI, five grandchildren, Sherry Harwood and her husband Ricky of Greenville, TN, Michael English and his wife Debra of Andrews, NC, Linda Newton and her husband Brian of Mooresville, NC, Terry Atkins of Arden, NC and Adonia Basso of Iron Mountain, MI. Also remaining are four great-grandchildren, Carissa English Cornwell of Andrews, Candice Newton of Mooresville, Sean Newton of Charlotte and Kurtis English of Murphy and three great-great-grandchildren, Hunter and Kaleb Cornwell and Breanna Newton.
A memorial service is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. Saturday, January 31st in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. with the Reverend Danny Jenkins officiating.
The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
The family would like to give special thanks to the staffs of Universal Health Care Center and Four Seasons Hospice.
We did not know Lucille but heard MANY wonderful things about her from Linda and Candi. They would light up when ever they spoke of her. I know this will be extremely hard on both of them, and on all who knew her. Our thoughts, as well as our love, are with you all at this difficult time.
My mother could not have had a better roomate and friend at Universal Healthcare. Lucille was a little lady with a huge heart. On my visits I enjoyed our talks and hearing all about her life and her family who she loved so much! She talked about you all. I will miss her everytime I walk into that room and will be forever grateful for the way she looked after and loved my Mom. You are all in my prayers. Love Pat

Our deepest Sympathy
Ma was a wonderful woman that touched my heart in ways that can’t be described. She will be in my heart and prayers always. Please accept my condolences and sorrow for your family’s loss. Though we all slip from this mortal coil, the love we have in all of us is from those who have gone before us, and will live on in us with the love and happiness that they gave us.
Lucille was a wonderful, sweet lady. I truly enjoyed each and every visit with her during my time at Universal Healthcare . She will be missed.
I love you, Ma! You will always be in my heart. There is not a day that will pass that I don’t miss you and want you here with me but I know that you are singing with the choir in heaven just as you always wanted. I love you more than words can ever express. I will always be your baby!
May the hope that sustained God’s followers thousands of years ago through today give you all strength and encouragement knowing that these promises are soon to be realized: Acts 24:15 ‘…and I have hope toward God, which hope these [men] themselves also entertain, that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteous and the unrighteous.’
Lucille was a wonderful, caring, loving, mother and gradmother, but most of all the greatest friend a person could ask for. She was the backbone of her family and will never be forgotten. Her spirt lives on through the lives of her loved ones. non mai dimenticato.
Sincerely,
Ashley

Aunt Lucille was my closest aunt on my dad’s side of the family. She lived with us for a while when Uncle Calvin was in service. Carole and I were closest cousins until she was married, as well as myself. The memories I have of Aunt Lucille are very dear – she would tell us bedtime stories and it would seem so real. She was probably the most calm and gentle person I can remember from my younger years. The memories we all have of her are good and bring a smile to our face.
Mary Frances (Pug) have missed you all these years – my heart is with you and I’m sure my Dad and your Mom have had some pretty great conversations in their new home.
Love and prayers to all the grandchildren too.
Your cousin Ellen
We are so sorry to hear that Lucille has passed away. We just found out when June & Harry returned from Florida a couple of day’s ago.
Lucille was a wonderful loving Aunt and will be greatly missed by all of her family and friends.
It has been so long since we last saw her, but we thought of her often. Mother frequently talked so kindly about her and we think she and Lucille looked so much alike.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you!
Love to you all,
Jim & Cindy
