Asheville ~ Lucy Stroupe “MaMaw” Reed, 95, of Bee Ridge Road, Asheville, died Sunday, October 24, 2004, in a local hospital.
A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late Charlie L. and Sallie Kate Sorrells Stroupe. She also was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby Riddle, brothers, George Edgar Stroupe and Jack L. Stroupe and sons Morris Reed and Kenneth Reed.
She was a former employee of Asheville Mica for over fifty years and also a former employee of Farnam Manufacturing. She was a member of Gashes Creek Baptist Church for more than fifty years.
As a very loving, caring, generous and helpful person, she will be missed by many.
She is survived by two daughters, Doris Rice and Betty Jean Lanning, both of Asheville, one son, Lloyd Reed of Asheville; sister, Helen Elkins of Asheville; two brothers, John H. Stroupe and Fred A. Stroupe, both of Asheville. She is also survived by eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandsons and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Wednesday in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian conducted by the Reverend Dr. John T. Tiller and the Reverend Lester Crayton. Burial will follow in Gashes Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. Mrs. Reed's grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:30 PM Tuesday at the funeral home on Long Shoals Road. At all other times, the family will be at Doris Rice's home, 273 Mills Gap Road.
Flowers are appreciated and memorials may be made to the Gashes Creek Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, c/o Sandra Lyda, 37 Bee Ridge Road, Asheville, 28803. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses in the Intensive Care Unit of Mission Hospitals, St. Joseph’s Campus.

She is a woman that was full of spirit and loved everyone. She is a woman that will always be dear to me and never forgotten. I love her but never as much as she loved the wonderful family and friends that she had. God Bless
I will always remember Mrs.Reed as a loving and wonderful person. She was my childhood babysitter and friend. God bless her sweet family…
