New Rochelle, NY
Mabel Duyck Stewart, 80, of New Rochelle, NY, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, September 5, 2008. Formerly of Asheville, Mabel relocated to New Rochelle in 2005 to reside with her son Larry.
Born in Asheville to the late Jesse Carl and Macie Wright Duyck, she was also preceded in death by her husband, Homer A. Stewart, who died in 1965; brothers, Jim and J.C. and a sister, Freida. Mabel graduated from Swannanoa High School and enjoyed many reunions with her classmates. She was an active member of Morningside Baptist Church for decades prior to relocating and was active in their "Keenagers" Club for many years.
Mabel began her career in banking with First National Bank in Asheville. She was the first female bank officer named in the Western North Carolina Region of First Union more than 40 years ago. Her entire banking career spanned more than five decades.
A woman with a wry sense of humor, Mabel was a die hard Democrat who loved following politics and current political events. She was a world traveler having visited more than 42 countries. Other interests included reading, baking, needlework and preparing her annual Christmas "Sugared Pecans", loved by those who were lucky enough to receive them. Known for her grit, determination and southern charm, Mabel was enjoyed and loved by all who knew her.
Surviving are her son, Larry D. Stewart of New Rochelle; her sister-in-law, Sally Duyck of Asheville; her brother-in-law, Bill Wright of Ocean Isle, NC and her caring nieces and nephews, DeAnne Ewan, Sheila Duyck, Lisa Frisbee, Jim Duyck, Jr., Steven Wright, David Wright and Greg Duyck. She will be sorely missed by her dear friends especially Margaret Camardella and Ted Stewart of New Rochelle; Bunnie, Priscilla and Charles Silver of Asheville; Agnes Mason and Thomas Davies of New York.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am Wednesday at Morningside Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Joe Babb officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Friends may visit at the church prior to the service beginning at 9:30 am.
May the Lord take her by the hand into Paradise to reunite her with beloved family and friends. Bless her heart forever.
I grew up with Aunt Mabel in Asheville – spending the occassional Saturday night with her, we would watch Perry Mason or The Carol Burnett Show together. While a teenager, I was fortunate to see her often as I mowed her yard during the springs and summers. I enjoyed time with her as she always took an interest in what I or my family were doing. She was very special to me. I will miss my Dear Aunt.

I, too, grew up in Asheville, spending lots of time with Mabel, as she was my mother’s only sister. We had so many special times together. I loved her ‘chocolate thing’, as she called it, that she used to make on Sunday nights when we watched home movies at her house. I was also fortunate to travel with her to many countries and I have so many fond memories of those times. My mother, Freida, pre-deceased her, and Mabel always told me she wished that she could talk to her. I find peace knowing that they are together now in a much better place, and will be able to visit to their hearts’ content:) I will miss her terribly. She was very special to me and my girls. With love, DeAnne
I share in my family’s sense of loss. Mabel gave love and was loved in return. We will all miss her. Larry, no mother could ask for a more caring son. You made Mable’s sunset years as comfortable and rich as possible.
Dear Larry Dean,
I felt so saddend when Sally called to tell me the news of Mabels homegoing.I have such great memories when I was a teenager going to spend the night with her and your Dad. she always had a close relationship with Mother and Dad. I have some great home videos of you and Dickie and your Mom and Dad when you and Dickie were just little boys.I found a picture of your Dad and mine holding a string of fish they were so proud of.I also have some home videos of you and Dickie and your Mom and Dad
and my Mom and Dad on a lot of their Sunday outings on the Parkway.I would love to show them to you sometime . Know I will be praying for you…
All my Love, Linda
I miss my dear Aunt Mabel. There are many warm memories of times with her when I was a child. I would spend Friday nights with her (she always told me yes when I asked), and we would watch Donnie and Marie with Poo, the poodle, right beside us. Mabel was a fixture in my life, always there for Sunday dinners at my grandmother’s. As an adult, I enjoyed visiting with Mabel, some serious conversations, and a lot of laughter. I thank Mabel for these memories. I will miss her.
Lisa
Dear Larry,
We are saddened by the loss of Mabel, albeit we have not seen her for several years. We met many of the cousins, aunts and uncles at a restaurant before Aunt Viola and Leo passed away. Your mother was there and we had a wonderful visit with her and other Wright relatives. I remember her from my early childhood as well as when she and Homer were married and especially when you were born. I have some pictures of you, Dickie and Paul when you were younger. I am your Uncle Burgin’s daughter, Jeanette. You and the rest of our family are always in my prayers that God will keep you in His care.
Much love,
Cousins,Jeanette and Ed Parham
Dear Uncle Larry ~
Our hearts and prayers go out to you right now. Mabel was a strong and beautiful woman and although she can’t be with us in person she will never leave our memories.

Larry,
You have our symphany.
My family and I were blessed to have a lovely christian lady like Mabel Stewart as our friend and neighbor. Mabel and I talked everyday, I always asked about Larry and her loved ones. Sometimes he would call while were talking, and that made her so happy. Now she will be reunited with her family and friends in a heavenly place. We all love you Mabel very much with love annd prayers.
