Mary Lou Lovingood Allen

January 13, 1911 ~ June 12, 2013
Resided in:
Candler, NC
A gentle and gracious spirit, Mary Lou Lovingood Allen, 102, of Candler, NC peacefully passed away June 12, 2013. A native of Andrews, NC she was born in Cherokee County in 1911. She resided at the Oaks of Sweeten Creek for 7 years. Surviving are one daughter, Ruby Lee Rockett (James), granddaughter Laura Ann Clark, and treasured extended family.
She was preceded in death by parents Rev. Noah and Tina Lovingood of Hanging Dog, husband Fred Allen, of Candler, three brothers and five sisters.
A member of Montmorenci Methodist Church and choir, she was a dedicated and loving servant to God. After the death of Fred in 1969, Mary lived alone until age 95 before moving to the Oaks. She truly enjoyed each day as it presented itself, never requiring many material things. She loved her family, God's creatures, and read her Bible daily. Mary played guitar, piano, and sang most every day. A home maker, family always came first in her life. Her grace, strength and conviction remain wonderful examples to her family. She laughed everyday, loved her birds, and never once complained.
Mary and her sisters were known as "The Lovingood Sisters" string band, touring the country with musical founder of the Smokey Mountain Folk and Dance Festival, Bascom Lamar Lunsford. Among the first bands to ever perform at the festival, they later in life appeared on "Fire on the Mountain," with host David Holt.
Mary Lou lived a full and long, happy life. Her presence will be greatly missed. Her family will forever have the privilege of knowing her, learning from her, and loving her. To the staff at The Oaks at Sweeten Creek, we thank you for your loving care and devotion.
A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, June 29 at 3 pm at Groce Funeral Home, Patton Avenue, with the Rev. Ron Brown officiating. Visitation will be one hour prior. Memorials may be made to Enka Baptist Church, P.O. Box 219, Enka, NC 28728.

Please accept my sympathy in the passing of your Mother. I remember her very well. She was such a good person.
Ruby. I am so sorry to hear of your mothers passing. God was so good to her and blessed her with so many great talents. As I think of you, she left a great legacy for you to follow. May we all take a deep feeling of blessings from her as she rests in Heaven. Thinking of you and wish I could relieve someof your pain but time and God removes part of it. Love, Barbara Plemmons
