Arden ~ Max Rufus Rhodes, 94, of Atkins Street, died Thursday, February 27, 2003 in a local nursing facility.
A native of Buncombe County, Mr. Rhodes was the son of the late Mary Etta Frady Rhodes and "B.J." Bud Rhodes. He was also preceded in death by a sister Pauline Butler, a brother Carlee Rhodes and his twin sister, Mable Rhodes Gasperson.
Mr. Rhodes was retired as a heavy equipment operator in the coal mining and construction industries. He was a member of Skyland Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife of sixty-six years, Margaret Ellen Carter Rhodes; a son, William Lawrence Rhodes and his wife, Jan of Topeka, KS; two grandsons, William Lawrence Rhodes, Jr. and his wife, Nancy of W. Babylon, NY and Charles Brian Rhodes of KS; three great-grandchildren, Tom, Julia and Jamie; a sister, Sally Green of Landrum, SC; a brother, John Rhodes of Saluda and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted Sunday at 2:00 PM in the chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road with Rev. Perry K. Brindley officiating. Interment will follow in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory.
The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 7:00 until 8:30 PM at the funeral home.
