Michael Leslie Shields, 63, of Candler, died Saturday, October 20, 2012. Mr. Shields was born in Buncombe County and was a son of the late Maynard Earl and Gladys Mae Ramsey Shields. He received his Master's Degree in Hospital Administration from UNC-Chapel Hill and served hospitals in Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and most recently Henderson, NC, enjoying each stop on their journey through life. Wherever he and Paula lived, they were active in their churches and civic organizations. In Candler, they attended Davis Chapel United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Paula Wooten Shields; three daughters, Ashley Parrott and husband, Jamie, Brooke Shields, and Paige Shields; four grandchildren, Jordan, Jake and Jeremy Parrott and Shaunie Williams; a brother-in-law, Timothy Wooten and his daughter, Bethany; a mother-in-law, Emily Wooten; and two nephews, Steve Shields and Tim Shields. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Wednesday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald E. Hartman officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday one hour prior to the service. Memorials may be made to Davis Chapel United Methodist Church, 36 Piney Mountain Church Road, Candler, NC 28715.

    I am so sorry for the loss of your husband and father. I have often thought of you both over the years and sorry that we lost touch. I have lots of fond memories of you and Mike at my wedding and of our time together at Granville. I am working at Maria Parham Inpatient Rehab as of last month, where I learned today of Mike’s passing. He had many wonderful friends here that thought highly of him. I will be praying for you, Paula and for your family during this difficult time. I would love to reconnect with you in the future and again, I’m sorry for your loss. Thinking of you.

  25. We just found out about Mike today. We were taken aback to say the least! To your entire family, we wish peace and love. Both of us remember Mike with great fondness in the Pi Kapp days. We are extremely saddened by the news of his passing.
