Fletcher, NC – Orville James Nichols, 94, is now part of God's Heavenly family having passed Sunday, April 18, 2010.
He lived a rich, full life. He was a true Christian with an extended family of four daughters, 12 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. He knew and loved them all.
Born and raised in Kansas, then moved to Chicago as a youngster, where he met and married Martha Marie Pulling. Soon after marriage they moved with their daughters, Jeanne and Anne, to the suburbs, where another child, Nancy, was soon born. He ran an appliance store in Downers Grove, Illinois and then worked for Sears. Orville was transferred to Michigan but by that time the children had started their extended families.
Subsequent moves brought Martha and Orville to Wisconsin, and then to Ohio. They retired to Asheville, then to their daughter Anne's in Kentucky where Anne was a Hospice Nurse and later died of Lou Gehrig's Disease. Moving back to North Carolina brought them to Fletcher to live with their daughter, Nancy. They joined the Fletcher United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his daughters, Jeanne Marie Eddy of Pfafftown, NC and Nancy Jane Spruth of Fletcher, NC.
No services are planned.
Memorials may be made to Four Seasons Hospice, 571 South Allen Road, Flat Rock, NC 28731 or to Friends of the Library, P.O. Box 999, Fletcher, NC 28732.

Nancy and Jeanne I’m so very sorry for your loss, and I know words can’t take away the pain. But know that you’re in my thoughts and prayers Hugs…………………….
In the short time that I knew Orville, I thought that he and Martha were just wonderul people. I was very fond of them. Less than 2 weeks ago, I came over to put Orville’s window air conditioner in and to do a little cleaning for him. Orville gave me a lesson or two on basic electricity. Orville was a sweet man and a very intelligent man. He could explain things in a simple way. I will never forget his laugh, his smile, his wisdom and his wonderful friendship. My sincere condolences to the family.

Nancy, I know you are going to miss your father and all his good advice.
I am so glad he did’t move like he was considering. My condolences to you and all your family.
Mary Lane and I will certainly miss Nick greatly but we were so glad when he and Martha returned to this area. We have enjoyed their friendship so much since meeting them in the late 1980’s. Nick was a fellow radio amateur and we will miss him greatly; he was a fine man who enjoyed his family so much and told us about them many times. Rest in peace, dear friend. We send our love to every one of you.
