  15. Dear LaNita, Jack, and family,
Please accept my condolences on Mr. Carter’s passing. Though I didn’t know you were his daughter when I met you some 25 years later, LaNita, it was your dad who gave me my first haircut during my childhood in West Asheville. Many a Saturday my dad brought my brother and me in for our trims, and I always thought of Parnell Carter as just what a friendly, neighborhood businessman should be: a professional at his trade, a leader in his community, and a good man with a good heart.
He made his mark on many, many people in Western North Carolina, and he will certainly be missed. My heart is with you.
    Andy Reed

  19. My condolences and prayers to the Carter Family….Cassie and I lived across Monte Vista Road from where Parnell lived (on Vista Knoll) for a few years after we got married in ’77. We would walk over and talk to Parnell from time to time. I don’t think there are too many young men who grew up in the fifties, sixties and seventies within three or four miles of the Brevard Road/Haywood Road intersection that didn’t know Parnell. He cut my hair for years as he did most of my male friends and their fathers. You could even get brought up on local politics if you were there when Luke Atkinson would walk over from his furniture store or Danny Judd’s dad would walk down from his hardware store. He cut my hair just before I finished my leave between my tour in Panama and the upcoming tour in Vietnam some 44 years ago this month and I remember he had a tear in his eye as he shook my hand goodbye. The Model Barber Shop was a landmark there next to Moody Jewelers and the Ideal Drug Store. Parnell will be sorely missed in our hearts and minds as he was such a part of our youth and, looking back on it, a role model for being a honest person and a gentleman.

  20. LaNita, I just learned about your father and my deepest sympathy and condolences go out to you and your family. Your father was a wonderful man and I know that you will miss him.
