Born in: Asheville, NC
Resided in: Asheville, NC

Reverend William (Bill) Alvin Snyder, 92, passed away Friday, September 16, 2022, at his beloved mountain farm in the Riceville Valley of Asheville, NC.

Rev. Snyder was born May 13, 1930, in Asheville to the late Alvin Lee Snyder and Dorothy Stiles Snyder. He received his Master of Divinity degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. He served as pastor in a number of churches across North Carolina, including Beverly Hills Baptist in Asheville. He later served as Chaplain for the Asheville Police Department.

Bill never met a stranger. “Hello, I’m Wild Bill!” and with that you were invited to come visit his garden and take home as much as you could carry. And if it wasn’t a garden hoe, then he would likely have a fishing rod or a hiking stick in hand as he invited you on an adventure you wouldn’t soon forget.

Bill loved to share stories that grew more colorful with each telling. He left a deep legacy of love of the outdoors, generosity, tenacity, and caring for others.
Bill was preceded in death by his sweet wife of 69 years, Margaret Sublett Snyder. Bill is survived by two daughters, Holli Chiles (John) and Brenda Faber (Jim); two sons, Paul Snyder (Angie) and Tim Snyder (Kim); six grandchildren, Jake, Monique, Ben, Nate, Charles and Will; three great-grandchildren, Brantley, Madison, Shane; his brother, Joseph David Snyder, and his two sisters Gail Swan and Mary Beth Bradley.

A private family graveside service will be held at Green Hills Cemetery.

A public Celebration of Life is planned for Sunday, October 9, 2022, at First Baptist Church Asheville at 2:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either the Asheville Police Chaplains Program at https://www.gofundme.com/f/chaplain-bill-snyder or to First Baptist Asheville in honor of Bill Snyder.

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. To Bill’s Children & Family,

Your father will always be held in a treasured place within me. On November 17, 1969 he came to Charles C Bell Elementary School to inform and take care of a seventh grader who had just lost his father. It was gym class with the and situation / news being quite difficult for a 13 year-old to grasp. It was necessary to change out of the gym attire and my hands were shaking to the point that I could not button my shirt. Bill reached down and helped me finished get dressed with caring as if I was one of his very own. I do remember that moment nearly 53 years later with a moist eye. Your father simply cared for another soul in the manner which we all have been called to do.

2 Corinthians 3:2 says “Ye are our epistle written in our hearts”…Bill will forever be scripted in mine. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

  2. Our sincere sympathy to the Snyder family. Bill was a wonderful neighbor to us. We have fond memories of his many kindnesses to our family…always bringing his fresh garden vegetables, picking up the snakes that crawled into our carport, shoveling the snow from our car after the blizzard and always asking “Can I do anything to help you today?” He and Margaret have blessed us so much through the years and they will always have a special place in our hearts.

  3. A kind man who raised the kindest of children. My heart goes out to all the Snyder family. You are all in my prayers. May you find peace and comfort.

  4. Holli, Brenda, Paul, Tim, and Family,
Sending loving thoughts and prayers your way. What sweet memories of our time growing up as neighbors on Keasler Rd. and at Beverly Hills Baptist Church. Your Dad will always hold a special place in my heart, and your precious Mom as well. What a comfort knowing that they are now reunited in Heaven together again.

  5. Holli and Family,

So sorry to hear about your Dad. Please know that you and entire family are in our hearts and prayers.

  6. What a precious man he was. He married us in 2014 and will never forget he said you may kiss the bride, and he kissed me first. It was so cute. I am so sorry. He was precious!!
