Roseann Eckert Dennehy, 74, passed away at home on May 16, 2022, surrounded by her family.
It is difficult to quantify the void that Rose’s passing leaves in the hearts of those who loved her.
She was a selfless and compassionate human being who always put the welfare of others ahead of her own. Although she formalized this nurturing instinct by obtaining a degree from Villanova University in Nursing, her desire to care for others was innate. Whether it was taking responsibility for the care of her infant twin siblings at 10 years old, or giving birth to and raising 5 children, or being the main health care provider for her elderly parents, Rose always took great joy in helping others.
Rose was the glue that held her immediate and extended family together. She knew how to throw a great party, whether it was a family reunion, a graduation party or a wedding, everyone came away with a smile on their face.
Her nursing career included work in Hospital Nursing, Public Health Nursing and she spent many years as the school nurse at Holy Spirit High School. Additionally, she taught Natural Childbirth classes for hundreds of future parents.
She became the owner of City Bakery in 2001, fulfilling a dream to own and operate a family business. She managed the growth of the business from a tiny storefront operation to a successful multi-store and wholesale operation and an Asheville icon.
Rose was the daughter of the late Joseph and Rita (Smith) Eckert. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Patrick; her five loving children, Molly Dennehy, Brendan Dennehy (Patty), Brian Dennehy (Rhianna), Megan Smith (Jeff) and Colin Dennehy (Katie). She is also survived by her adoring grandchildren, Kayla Peters, Eric Peters, Jack Dennehy, Liam Dennehy, Parker Smith, Lucia Dennehy, Evan Dennehy and Olivia Smith. She is also survived by siblings Joe Eckert, Charles Eckert, Marian Eckert, Delores Eckert, and Mark Eckert.
A celebration of her life will be held soon for family and friends.
