Roy S. Whitmire

November 27, 1908 ~ November 22, 1999

Mr. Whitmire was born in
Transylvania County and was the son of the late Toliver S. and Leona Fisher Whitmire. He served in the Army from 1928 to 1931 and was a former
employee of American Enka Co., where he served as president of the Enka Local Union No. 2598. He
retired in 1975 as International Vice-president of the United Textile Workers of America. Following his retirement, he served as a long-time
volunteer at Memorial Mission Hospital.
Mr. Whitmire was a member of West Asheville Baptist Church where he served as Sunday school teacher and deacon and was active with Boy Scout Troop 59. He also initiated the church shut-in visitation program.
He is survived by his wife of 52 years,Mary Helen Jones Whitmire; three daughters, Teresa Whitmire of Greensboro, Zona Simpson of Old Fort, and Royce Whitmire of Weaverville; a son, Chris Whitmire and his wife Terri of Linville; eight grandchildren, Mike Byrd, Debbie Ledbetter, Diane Feror, and Erin, Andrea, Valerie, Mara Beth, and Haley Whitmire; ten great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren, and three sisters, Dorothy Jones and Eula Pressley of Canton and Connie Martinez of San Francisco.
Funeral services will be at 3:00 pm Wednesday at West Asheville Baptist Church with the Revs. Ken Lewis, James H. Johnson, and A.W. Jones officiating. Burial will be at Pisgah View Memorial Park.
His family will receive friends at the church one hour prior to the service and request that memorials be made to West Asheville Baptist Church Building Fund, 926 Haywood Road, Asheville, NC 28806.
Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is in charge of the arrangements.
I was Secretary to Mr. Whitmire from 1965-1972. He was a wonderful boss and the knowledge and experiences I learned working with him during this time has always helped me tremendously in any employment I have had.
