Selby Palma Wright of Arden, North Carolina died March 4, 2024 at the age of 88 at Heather Glen Assisted Living facility.

Selby was born June 3,1935 in Asheville, North Carolina to the late Billy Palma Wright and Caroleen Elizabeth Selby Wright. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Floy Roland Wright and his sister, Anna Wright Ward. He is survived by his daughter, Floy Elizabeth Wright Kampe, her husband, Barry, and grandchildren, Nate and Lydia Kampe. He is also survived by his brothers, Billy Earle Wright of Fletcher and Samuel David Wright of Arden.

Selby graduated from Lee H. Edwards High School, Class of 1952 and was active in his class alumni group. He attended Clemson University where he studied mechanical engineering. There was very little he could not fix. He was the owner/operator of Wright Motor Lines Trucking Company and loved to tell stories about his many experiences over the years.

Selby enjoyed teaching swimming and water safety through The American Red Cross for nearly fifty years. He was a Lifetime Member of the Asheville Rifle and Pistol Club, where he enjoyed serving as an officer and competing in numerous shooting competitions through the years. He was a long time member of Temple Baptist Church. He was a history buff and loved talking about warfare, specifically related to battleships and World War II. He also enjoyed supporting his grandchildren in their sporting and artistic endeavors of baseball, basketball, soccer, softball, orchestra, and dance. It was exceedingly rare that he ever missed an opportunity to watch them and was very proud of all of their accomplishments.

A visitation will be held on Friday, March 29, 2024 from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian in Arden, followed by the funeral ceremony at 11:00 am with Pastor Patrick Creed officiating. Burial will then take place at Green Hills Cemetery in Asheville.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his memory to the American Red Cross or the Alzheimer’s Association.

  2. I am so sorry for your loss. I grew up across the road from Mr. Wright and he was such a kind man. He will be missed.
