Shirley Wooten Carter, 78, passed away on Sunday, April 11, 2021.

An Asheville native, Shirley was a daughter of the late George and Dora Roberts Wooten. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Tommy Clinton Carter, three brothers, and two sisters.

Shirley graduated from Lee H. Edwards High School. She later retired from Square D following 27 years of service. In her spare time, she enjoyed bowling and was a member and past Secretary of the WNC Bowling Association. Mrs. Carter was also a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church.

Mrs. Carter is survived by her daughter, Anita King (Robbie); son, Craig Carter (Margarita); grandchildren, Justin Wilson (Olivia) and Kyle Wilson (Paige); and great-grandson, Theo Wilson, all of whom she loved dearly. She is also survived by her sister, Patricia Wooten.

The funeral service for Mrs. Carter will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday at the Groce Funeral Home chapel on Patton Ave. Pastors Keith Watkins and Jason Cox will officiate. Interment will follow at Pisgah View Memorial Park.

Her family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Masks are required at the funeral home.

Right about now, I picture her dancing around with Uncle Tommy and possibly taken fishing with my mom and dad at the ocean of course. So many family members there to greet her.     I am so very sorry to learn of Shirley’s passing. I have such wonderful memories of when I took care of Tommy, as his home health RN. Shirley was intent & committed to follow my instructions to the letter. I was forever amazed at their sweet, loving relationship!
    Many years later when I went to work at Weaverville Family Practice, Shirley and I shared so many wonderful conversations. She was such a sweet lady!
