Born in: Buncombe Co., NC
Resided in: Canton, NC

Reverend Terry Wayne Penland, 65, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2019 at UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.

Terry was born on September 5, 1953, in Buncombe County, to Walter Calvin Penland and Kathryn Crabtree Penland, both now deceased. He lived in the Enka-Candler area, graduated from Enka High School in 1971, and grew up in the Mount Moriah Wesleyan Church in Candler. In his youth, Terry felt a strong call to enter full-time Christian ministry, graduating from Central Wesleyan College in 1976. He also attained his Wesleyan Church Conference license that same year. He served as pastor of the Sandy Cross Wesleyan Church from 1976-1979.

He was married to the love of his life, Amy Kelley Penland, from June 2, 1979, until her passing earlier this year. Amy and Terry loved each other very much, and spent countless hours in service to their community during their 40 years of marriage.

Terry earned a Master’s degree from Asbury Theological Seminary in 1982 before returning to full-time ministry, becoming ordained as a minister in the Wesleyan Church that same year. He went on to serve as Pastor at Statesville Northview Wesleyan (1982-1989), Rock Hill Wesleyan (1989-1994), Concord Wesleyan (1994-2002), and Canton Wesleyan (2002-2016).

He often expressed gratitude that he was able to spend so much of his life in Western North Carolina, whose people and mountains he loved so much. He also had wonderful friends and memories from every place and time in his life.

Pastor Terry, as he was known to so many church members, was truly dedicated to his faith and his family. He was an entertaining storyteller both in and out of the pulpit. He had a deep knowledge of the Bible and committed himself to its study. He also had a special gift for comforting grieving families. Many people counted on him for counsel and prayer during difficult periods of their lives. He was a steadfast husband, father, and grandfather who always made time for his loved ones and friends.

In addition to his wife and parents, Terry was preceded in death by his brother, Earl Christopher Penland. He is survived by his sister, Kathey Y. Penland, of Brighton, CO; his two children, Andrew Penland (Katie), of Cullowhee, and Hannah Trapp (Lee), of Matthews; as well as three grandchildren: Adeline Penland, Vincent Trapp, and Sophia Trapp. He also leaves behind several beloved members of his extended family.

A memorial service will be held at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, at Groce Funeral Home, with Reverend Jerry Lumston and Reverend David Vos officiating. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to World Hope International, ATTN: Gift Processing, P.O. Box 743794 Atlanta, GA 30374-3794, or on their website www.worldhope.org.

  1. I am so sorry, Andrew and Hannah. When we were together we had such good fellowship. He went wih me deep sea fishing one time during the late 80’s. Such a good friend. Amy and my wife Bobbie had such good fellowship during conference each year. he will be missed. Jesse and Bobbie Garmon

  2. Hannah and Andrew, I am saddened by the loss of your Dad. He was a wonderful pastor and friend, always ready to help if needed. He will be missed.

  3. I was Terry’s pastor (71-78) at Mt.Moriah when he graduated from high school. Of course, we stayed in close contact when he was at CWC and all throughout his life. He loved Jesus! He was a kind, gentle man who possessed a loving, caring spirit. I will miss him! I am certain he is with Jrsus today!

  4. Terry and Amy were both very special people in my book. I talked to him both during Amy’s sickness and passing. He was always so gracious and kind. He had a big heart and a keen mind. We’ve lost a true friend but plan on seeing him again in God’s tomorrow.

  5. I remember Terry from high school but have not seen him since. I’m so sorry to hear of his passing. May God wrap his arms around his family.

  6. Prayers to the family in this time of sorrow. I went to high school with Terry but had not seen him since. But he was always in our conversations with fellow classmates as we remembered good times.

  7. So sad to read Terry’s obituary in today’s Charlotte Observer. He and I were in first grade together at Candler School in 1959, continuing through to graduation from Enka High in 1971. He was highly intelligent, yet so kind-hearted. What a great legacy he leaves behind. May God’s peace and comfort sustain the family as they grieve the loss of Terry.

  8. I am so very sorry for your lost,i have known Terry all my life,he will be missed.
God has a new angel in heaven.

  9. I went to high school with Terry and have not seen him in a long time. I remember him as a kind gentle person. May God be with all family members during this sad time.

  10. So sorry for your loss. Terry was a EHS classmate of mine. Keeping the family in our prayers at this time.

  11. Andrew and Hannah, I am so sorry to hear of your dad’s passing. Just remember you will see him and your mom again. I am praying for you and your family.

  12. Dear Andrew, Hannah, and family. I sincere sympathy for your loss and our promise to pray for you as you go through the transition to life without your wonderful father and mother. We considered them both to be very special friends and co-workers in the kingdom of God. We shared so many good times and special interests with each other. As you know, our loss is heaven’s gain. How incredibly precious is the promise of our Lord that we will see Him and be reunited one day just like your dad and mom have just experienced. They will be among some of the first that we will look for when we get there!

  13. Andrew & Hannah we just heard of your father’s passing. We are so sorry. We went to school with your mom and dad. Wonderful friends. We also pastored Mt. Moriah and spent time with them while we were there. Also seeing them at conference was another delight. He will be greatly missed. May God comfort your heart’s in your time of loss.

  14. So sorry to hear of Terry Wayne’s passing. Had just attended Amy’s service and got to talk to him then. We grew up on Hillcrest St with them and have so many good memories of those days. Let us know if their’s anything we can do and know we’ll be thinking about you. The Stanberry Family

  15. I have very fond memories of Terry Wayne and the Penland family while growing up in the Enka village. I fished with Earl, worked with Walter, and always admired Kathies courage. I got to talk with Terry at Earls funeral and had hoped to get back in touch. I am so sorry to the family and wish gods blessing upon you
