Asheville - Thomas Bain Lanich, 74, of 89 Le-An-Hurst Road, died Sunday, December 29, 2002. A native of Clearfield, Penn., he was a son of the late William Chester and Nellie Mae Smith Lanich. He was a former employee, for 25 years, of the Harbison-Walker Refractories in Clearfield and was a former Fire Chief for the Clearfield Borough and member of the Fair Board for the 2nd Ward Fire Co. In Asheville he was an active member of the Asheville Moose Lodge. He is survived by his wife, Sherrian Ellis Lanich; two daughters, Susan Lanich and Joann Arndt, both of Tucson, AZ; three grandchildren;one great-grandchild; two sisters, Joanie Aveni, and her husband Jim, of Clearfield, PA and Judy Gardner, and her husband Jack, of Clearfield; three brothers, Leo Lanich, and his wife Joanne, of Clearfield, Edwin Lanich, and his wife Margaret, of Clearfield and Merle Lanich of Black Creek, New York. Services will be held at 12 noon Thursday in the chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Black Mountain conducted by the Rev. Ronnie Owen. Military rites will be conducted by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Team. A memorial mass will be held in Clearfield, PA at a later date to be announced. His family will receive friends from 7 until 8:30 pm Wednesday at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian on Long Shoals Road.
