Vernon Oakley Smith, 84, of The Summit, 100 Riceville Road, Asheville, died Wednesday, February 28, 2001, while under the care of The Summit nursing staff.

Mr. Smith was originally from Babylon Village, NY, where he was a letter carrier for the US Postal Service for more than thirty-three years. He was stationed in Europe with the US Army during WW II before being discharged in 1946. He retired to Waynesville in 1971 where he resided before moving to The Summit in 1999.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret K. Smith.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Monday in the chapel of the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with the Rev. Roger Arnsparger officiating. Burial will follow in the Veterans Cemetery.

Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue is in charge of the arrangements.
