Walter G. Jenkins, Jr.

Walter G. Jenkins, Jr., 85, formerly of 33 Nevada Avenue, Asheville, died Wednesday, March 5, 2003, in a local nursing center. Mr. Jenkins was born in Buncombe County and was a son of the late Walter G. and Fonnie Miller Jenkins, Sr. He was married to Gladys Hyde Jenkins who died February 28, 2002. Mr. Jenkins was an Army Air Corps veteran of WW II. He was retired from the US Postal Service and was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers and of Calvary Baptist Church. Surviving are one daughter, Pamela DeFriess and her husband Raymond of Mebane; two grandchildren, Natalie DeFriess and Jonathan DeFriess’ a sister-in-law Eleanor Ownbey and her husband Nathan of Asheville and sister-in-law Evelyn House and her husband Cliff of Warner Robbins, GA. Funeral services will be at 2:00 pm Saturday in the Patton Avenue chapel of Groce Funeral Home with the Rev. Dr. Buddy Corbin and the Rev. Sue Wright Barron officiating. Burial will be at Green Hills Cemetery. His family will receive friends from 1:30-2:00 pm at the funeral home prior to the service.
