Wayne Calvin Smith, 82, passed away Monday, January 10, 2022 at Care Partners Hospice Solace Center in Asheville while holding the hand of his lifelong love, Peggy.

Mr. Smith was born in Asheville to the late Wade Champlin Smith and Jennie Irene Buckner Smith Childs. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Brenda Webb.

He adored his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved sharing Jesus with them so they would all join him in Heaven one day. He sent a Bible verse to all the children and grandchildren every single morning. Wayne retired as a district manager with Roses in 1993 with over 30 years with the company. In retirement, he continued to work by servicing gas logs. He was an avid Braves fan and a former Gideon. However, his true life’s work and passion was his family.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Gaddy Smith; four children, Steven Smith (Michelle), Dr. Scott Smith (Kelley), Stacey Smith (Heidi) and Sonja Ash (Keith); a sister, Sandy Totherow; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 14, 2022 at 2:00pm at Bethany United Methodist Church with Rev. Charles Rogers officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at the church. Burial will follow in the church’s cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bethany United Methodist Church, 212 Bethany Church Road, Fairview, NC 28730.

    I grew up with him and went to church with his Family at Woodfin Baptist. He grew up in a godly family! Wayne had a beautiful smile just like his Mother!

    I’d saddens me to learn if Wayne’s passing away. He and I were good friends at Erwin. We had the lead roles in both our Junior and Senior Class Plays. I appreciated having him as a friend.

  17. Wayne and I were friends from Woodfin Hi School….played baseball on the 1955 team .We won the County Championship for the 4th year in a row played at McCormick Field in Asheville. Last time I saw him was at his Rose,’s Store in VA. Beach . Wayne was always a good man and friend. We will meet again in the land across the River ..bless him and all his family.
