William Edward "Bill" Wilmerding V Major, USAF (Ret.), 95, of Asheville, passed away on June 12th, 2016 at Flesher's Nursing Home, in Fairview. Bill was born in Des Moines, Iowa, but called the Skyland/Asheville area of North Carolina his home. He lived many other places, including St. Louis, Mo., and Santa Fe, New Mexico. His military career took him to numerous parts of the U.S. and also to Japan. He lived in Asheville for the last 35 Years. Bill graduated from Lee Edwards High School in Asheville. He left UNC, Chapel Hill to join the Air Force immediately after Pearl Harbor, and served as a fighter and bomber pilot in the European Theater of Operations. He retired from the Air Force after 20 years as a Major with a Command Pilot rating. His post-military career was mostly civil service work, from which he retired as a Planning Officer at Scott AFB, in Illinois. Bill was an avid golfer, having played golf into his nineties. Bill also loved traveling and hiking with his wife Terry, and they spent much time enjoying the beauty of the Blue Ridge Parkway. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William Edward Wilmerding IV and Sarah Farrow Wilmerding; his sister Mary Athalinda Wilmerding, and his half-sister Anne Caroline Wilmerding. He was also preceded in death by three sons: Craig Wilmerding, Bruce Wilmerding and William Joyner. Bill is survived by his wife of 53 years, Theresa Norton Wilmerding; sons Buck (Mickey) Wilmerding and Gary (Lois) Wilmerding; stepdaughter Sherry Thorne; stepsons Mike (Linda) Currier and Chuck (Denise) Currier; grandchildren Michael (Monica) Thorne, Christopher Currier, Matthew Currier, Brian Wilmerding, and Jeffrey Wilmerding; and great-grandchildren Mason Currier, Anais Thorne and Lucas Thorne. The family would like to offer a special thanks to the staff of the Flesher's Fairview Nursing Home and Hospice for their compassionate and loving care of Bill, in his final days. Military services with honors will be held at Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, 962 Old US 70 Highway, Black Mountain, North Carolina on August 9th, at 2:00 p.m.

Neither will mourning nor outcry nor pain be anymore. The former things has passed away.’ The Bible gives us hope that one day our dead loved ones will be brought back to life.

What has help me to cope and deal with lost a love one is found God’s Word the Bible in Psalms 113:5-8 ‘Who is like Jehovah our God, The one who dwells on high? 6 He stoops down to look on heaven and earth, 7 Raising the lowly from the dust.
