I found Captain Long’s memorial page today as I was thinking of Him(As I often do, and have) ,over the years when I am faced with adversity. My father introduced me to Lee Long at his auction during what was a larger than life time for me as a boy of thirteen; It was the right time, because Lee Long remained larger than life to me. To this day, I remember and try to emulate His commanding presence,His poise, grace, and eloquence. In trying times there are the knee jerk reactions, that if seen would leave a less than favorable impression; Fortunately, for me, I was blessed to have a role model like Lee Long; So, instead of others seeing a lesser version of myself–It is really often just an imitation of Him. In knowing Lee Long, I felt as though I had a secret advantage– I had one foot in a world that was so much larger than the petty problems of jr./ high school. Now, as a grown man facing adversity this very morning–I said to myself “How would Lee Long react to this?” I was blessed to be able to tell Lee what he meant to me and the impact He had on my life during a phone call after my fathers funeral. Lee either didn’t believe me, or grasp why..Until I explained. I don’t know if He believed me. He may not have believed that His influence would extend to this chapter of my life; But I can say I am a better man for having been around Captain Lee Long. Our country need men like Him now. I remember at my fathers funeral, my wife had never met Lee, But when He walked into the room , She said “That’s Lee Long isn’t it?” …Truly a graceful and gallant man.
