Alvin G.L. Cooper, 88, of Candler, died on Sunday, January 2, 2011, at the St. Joseph Campus, Mission Hospitals.
A native of Glen Alice, TN, he was a son of the late Ransome Ratio and Vina Rollins Cooper. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jayne Parker Cooper, who died in 1995; his sisters, Margaret Winfield, Hazel Burgess, and Lucille Sharpe; and brothers, Grover, Claude, and Buddy Cooper.
Mr. Cooper had retired from Champion International. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in WWII. He reached the rank of S/Sgt., and served for five years in New Guinea and the Southern Philippines. Mr. Cooper was a member of VFW Post #9939. He was also a lifetime member of Hominy Baptist Church.
Mr. Cooper has also been very active with the Boy Scouts, and was a former Scout Master with Troop #45. He loved the outdoors, and was an avid fisherman.
Mr. Cooper is survived by his daughter, Jan Alexander and husband Bert, of Candler; sons, Larry Cooper and wife Doris Ward Cooper, of Candler, and Jerry Cooper and partner Jeff Jarnigan, of Washington, D.C.; sister, Charlotte Cothran, of Rock Hill, SC; and grandsons, Cory and Colby Alexander, both of Candler.
A funeral service for Mr. Cooper will be at 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Groce Funeral Home chapel on Patton Ave. with the Rev. Dr. Joe Yelton officiating. Interment will follow at Pisgah View Memorial Park.
His family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
