Anne B. Norburn

Lenoir City, TN- Anne Berkeley Norburn, 75, of Lenoir City, TN passed away on December 31, 2017 after an extended illness. Born August 18, 1942 in Asheville at the Norburn Hospital & Clinic which was founded by her father, the late Dr. Charles S. Norburn, and his brother, she was preceded in death by both her father and her mother, the late Helen Johnson Norburn.

Anne was a member of the first graduating class of Asheville Country Day School and attended Converse College. She played both the flute and piano at Brevard Music Center at the ages of 16 and 17, and later was a flutist in the Asheville Symphony where she was first chair. She was also a former member of All Souls Cathedral in Biltmore.

Throughout her life, Anne’s abiding trait was one of strong independence. As a teenager she was captain of the local rifle club; her father nurtured her skill in marksmanship, taking her out for target practice with his rifle in the extensive wooded area surrounding their home. Her passion for the outdoors extended to hiking, kayaking, and canoeing throughout the southeast, including an overnight venture with her companion deep in the Okefenokee swamp- alone but for the nearby alligators. This determination and fearlessness carried her through her latter years and her illness, as she continued to work full time until a few months before her death.

Surviving are her children, Helen Ingram of Candler, Juniata Lees of Frederick, MD, Susan Ingram of Huntersville, NC, Joel Ingram of Asheville, and Laura Ingram of Knoxville, TN; sisters Lillian Alexander of Asheville and Mary Robertson of Waxhaw, NC; brother, Charles Norburn of Fort Pierce, FL; 9 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

A visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:30 PM on Friday, January 12, 2018 at Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian. Private burial will be in the Norburn family plot at Riverside Cemetery.

Anne’s family asks that in lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution in her memory to St. Jude Children’s Hospital at
