Sara Ruth Stokes Duncan passed away peacefully Thursday, July 5, 2018.
Always full of love and with a smile for all she met, her joyous presence will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Regardless of what was going on around her, she always faced life with boundless optimism and an eternal good humor.
Born in Florence, SC, she was the daughter of the late Edwin Benjamin and Jennie Mae Hicks Stokes. She was married to David A. Duncan, who died in 1994, and to Cecil Mitchell who died in 2010, and was also preceded in death by her daughter, Sandra Jean Thompson of Austin, TX, her sister, Eloise Gault and brother, Robert Stokes.
Mrs. Duncan retired as a customer service rep with Southern Bell and then worked part-time at Memorial Mission Hospital. She volunteered at Hospice, Habitat for Humanity and Meals on Wheels. She was past President of the Asheville Council of Telephone Pioneers. She was a member of First Baptist Church for more than 95 years and the Good Shepherd Sunday School Class.
She is survived by grandchildren, Joy Martin and husband, Nick, Scott Thompson and wife Ana and Christopher Thompson and wife Suzanne; brother Ed Stokes (Betty); step-daughters, Pam Bustin, Laura Harbison, and Donna Morrow (Tom); step-son David Mitchell; great-grandchildren, Sara Ruth and David Thompson and Clementine Martin who were her pride and joy; 7 step grandchildren, 5 step great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and treasured friends, especially Allen and Judy Wolf who she loved as children.
Funeral services will be in the Chapel of First Baptist Church on Tuesday, July 10 at 11 AM with the Rev. David Blackmon officiating. Friends and family will be received at 10 AM. Burial will follow at Lewis Memorial Park.
