Hardie William Ammons, Jr, 87, of Asheville, passed away Sunday, February 3, 2019 at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals.
A native of Almond, NC, he was the son of the late Sadie Sawyer and Hardie William Ammons, Sr. He was also preceded in death by one sister, Jeanne Pace and her husband, Bill Pace.
Hardie proudly served his country as a member of the US Air Force, earning a National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and German Occupation Medal. He worked as an electronics technician at Honeywell for 33 years. In his “retirement” he went on to create and operate Industrial Controls Services for 9 years, then worked at Upstate Fleet Services for 14 years, HWA Trucking and finally provided rides via Uber and Lyft until the week before he passed away. In his spare time, Hardie enjoyed bees, boating and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Eleanor Poor Ammons; two sons, Jim Ammons and his wife, Kimberly and Steve Ammons; four grandchildren, Stephanie Heller and her husband, Russell, Autumn McKinney, Zachary Ammons and Isaac Ammons and three great-grandchildren, Haylee, Carter and Sadie Heller.
A Memorial Service with Military Honors will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, February 9 in the Chapel of Groce Funeral Home at Lake Julian and will be officiated by Reverend David Moore. The family will receive friends at the funeral home immediately following the service. A private burial will be held at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
