Floye West Swaim, 82, of Asheville, died on Saturday, April 21, 2012, at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals. A native of Buncombe County, she was a daughter of the late Floye Sherman and Nellie Lawaine Gentry West. She was also preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Jack Swaim, who died in June, 2007, a daughter, Peggy Jean Swaim, and by her brother, Clarence Kennedy West. Mrs. Swaim was a 1949 graduate of Lee H. Edwards High School and worked for many years as a bookkeeper at Fortune's Hardware in West Asheville. She was a member of Bent Creek Baptist Church. She was active with the "Glitter Girls" and with the Railroad Retirement group. Mrs. Swaim is survived by five children: Laura Jane Swaim Gevedon (Terry), John D. Swaim (Jeri), Dale A. Swaim (Carla Howell), all of Asheville, Michael T. Swaim (Kenna), of Houston, TX, and Carolyn E. Swaim Angel (William), also of Asheville; grandchildren: Thomas Gevedon and Aimee Atkinson, Traci Swaim and Kristi Swaim Tweed, Drew Swaim, Michael, Jr., Garrett and Kaitlyn Swaim, and Joshua, Jacob and Maura Angel; three great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Elizabeth Gevedon and Nathaniel Atkinson as well as four "on-the-way"; sister, Betty Jean West Rhodes, of Asheville; sisters-in-law, Edaline Brown West, of Candler, Agnes Swaim, and Sue Swaim Hardy, both of Tennessee; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral service for Mrs. Swaim will be at 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Bent Creek Baptist Church with the Revs. Tommy Bridges and Frank Ramos officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Her family will receive friends from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. Wednesday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue. Mrs. Swaim wanted to express her appreciation and the thanks of her grateful family to her best friend of more than 50 years, Patsy Hyatt Peters; her doctor, C.D. Maddox, M.D., Rene, Denise and Rebecca at Pulmonary Rehab, her Sunday School class, and to her family "for being my family". You live on in our hearts, the smiles of your children/grandchildren/great-grandchildren, fond memories, and the Floye knowledge you shared.     I was so sorry to read of Mrs. Swaim’s death when I returned from a trip out of town. I would certainly have come to the visitation had I been here.
