Resided in: Asheville, NC

Jack Ernest Bartlett, 84, of Reed St. went to be with the Lord Monday, September 10, 2012, at the John F. Keever Hospice Solace Center. Jack was born January 18, 1928, in Buncombe Co. to the late Rev. Ernest R. and Lilly Mae Fore Bartlett. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Polly Bartlett Silver. He was the owner of Jack Bartlett Moving and Construction Company and a member of Landmark Missionary Baptist Church. Jack was an avid bear hunter and always had a story. His stories were, without fail, full of humor, adventure, and fun. And that was Jack: he was a funny, outgoing man, who loved people almost as much as a good story, well told. He was always ready with a handshake or a smile, and had never met a stranger in his life. Jack also had a way with animals. From day-to-day, it was impossible to know what kind of creature he would bring home. Once, it was a cow; other times, it was a horse or a mule. His two dogs, Molly and Brandi, were always at his side. More than all these things, Jack loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. And, in knowing that, it gives comfort and assurance to his family. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Celeste Black Bartlett, and not a day passed that he did not remind her how much he loved her. He is also survived by sons Jack Everett Bartlett and wife Cindy, James Edward Bartlett, Randy Purcell, Tim Purcell and wife Rhonda, and Phillip Purcell and wife Debbie; grandchildren Jason Bartlett and wife June, Courtney Purcell Shaughnessy and husband Patrick, Matthew Purcell, Brandon Purcell and wife Megan, Aaron Purcell and wife Holly, Celesta "C.J." Purcell Hussung and husband Dale, Nathan Purcell and wife Katherine, and Jerod Purcell; great-grandchildren Elizabeth, Jacob, and Josiah Bartlett, Eli Purcell, and Olivia and Lola Purcell; sister Lois Bartlett Rich; and brothers Lewis Bartlett, Harold Bartlett and wife Doris, Clarence "Jinx" Bartlett and wife Helen, Charles Bartlett and wife Louise, and Dewey Bartlett and wife Judy. We will miss him. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday in the Patton Ave. chapel of Groce Funeral Home. Interment will follow at Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery. Grandson Jason Bartlett will be officiating. His family will receive friends from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Friday prior to the service at the funeral home.

  5. Bartlett Family:
I just wanted to take a few moments to let you know that our thoughts and prayers are with you all. I was pleased to have known Jack, and from the times that I was fortunate enough to have been with him, combined with the good that Joni has always spoken of him, I can tell he was a really special guy. It is of course most comforting to know that he knew the Lord as his Savior; besides that, nothing else really matters eternally speaking. We hope to see you all in the near future. Take care.

  6. Dear Bartlett Family,
My heartfelt regards to each of you who are still living. What a day it was for him to open his eyes in heaven and be in the presence of his Lord. Pray that the next generation will make their place in the gap where he was standing while here on earth. May God’s richest blessing be upon you all. See you soon, Bro. Bartlett.

  7. Sorry for the loss of Mr Jack Bartlett.Knowing he is in heaven with the Lord is a comfort. Knowing Mr Jack was a priviledge. We know how he cared for everyone and always had a good story to tell. Not good bye Mr Jack but see you later!

  8. What a sad time for all of you in the loss of a good man. It’s heartwarming tho to think back on the good times & consider all the smiles Jack created on other people’s faces. I will never forget him pulling into the Black Mtn horse show grounds with that little sorrel pony, Sampson, standing in the back floorboard of his car. Or seeing him chew the top edge off a cup from sheer nerves while he watched Everett show in the Parade horse class on Goldie. Now he is striding around heaven with no pain & no worries – just waiting for the rest of us to make our way there & what a reunion that will be! May your trust in God get you through this difficult time. You ALL have our sympathy.~~~ Audrey, Dot & JR Hunnicutt

  9. Jack will be greatly missed by all that knew him!!! My family and I were fortunate enough to have known Jack, and were lucky enough to call him a friend. I will never forget the time I spent at his house as a child with CJ, he was always so nice, loving, and giving!!! God definitely broke the mold when he made Jack!!! Thoughts and prayers go out to Jacks family and friends during this difficult time. My family and I love you very much CJ!!!

  10. Jack, From the first time I met you when I was fifteen years old I knew you were someone special, and when my daddy died I actually found out how special you really were. You told me that if was ok with me that if I needed someone as a father figure then you would be there for me and you were. I remember back in the day when we had alot of good conversations and I will never forget the one thing you ALWAYS said to me before we parted…but we’ll keep that our little secret..okay…lol. I miss you and dont worry about Granny, we’ll watch out for her.My prayers are with you Celeste and I love you too.

  11. Jack’s family and church family know that Jack is where he wants to be, happy and safe in the arms of his precious Saviour, our Lord Jesus Christ. Our heartfelt condolences and prayers go out to his wife, sons, grandson, great grandchildren, and all of his many other family members.
He was always seated in his spot at the church he loved, Landmark Misionary Baptist Church. He had his special way of making everyone feel loved and special. He ALWAYS made me feel like I was very special to him and I loved this wonderful Christian man so much and will miss him until we meet again.
As he was being wheeled out after the last Sunday morning service he was able to attend, he smiled at me, took my hand in his and kissed the back of my hand. That was a loving, tender moment that I will never forget.
Jack you will be missed by so many and never forgotten.

  12. Dear Celeste:
We were so sad to hear about Jack’s passing. We will sure miss seeing him out in the yard….Brandi at his side. Each time we saw him he always said ‘I just want to walk again’. Well, Jack is walking those beautiful Streets of Gold. He has seen the face of our Lord Jesus Christ who has welcomed him Home with open arms.
Please know that you and the family are in our thoughts and prayers. If there is anything that we can do all you have to do is call.

    Love in Christ,
    Billy and Donna

  13. It is at times like this that family and friends come together in a special way to celebrate the life of a loved one who has gone home to be with Jesus. We have many wonderful memories of Jack through our family members and also our association with horses….and although we have not seen Jack for a number of years, he is as vivid in our minds and hearts as if it had only been yesterday. Our deepest sympathies go out to each of his family members and loved ones during this time of loss….and may you find comfort in the many memories you have of this special man and the impact he left on your life. The day Jack made his entrance into Heaven brought a lot of tears to those he left behind…but oh what a day of rejoicing it was for those who greeted him in that Heavenly city with the Lord. Take peace in knowing that there is a place deep within our hearts where those we’ve loved and lost…live forever.
