Dr. William A. Mynatt

William Atchley (Bill) Mynatt died on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Deerfield following a long and courageous battle against cancer. Born on April 7, 1927 in Knoxville, Tennessee, Bill was the son of William Howard and Anna Sumter Mynatt. Dr. Mynatt was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving 1945-1946 aboard the U.S.S. Hornet in the Pacific. He attended the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, College of Dentistry in Memphis and was a member of the Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity. The family moved to Asheville in 1955 to open his dental practice in Biltmore where he enjoyed a forty year career retiring in 1995. He served on the dental staff of Memorial Mission Hospital, Appalachian Hall and Highlands Hospital. He was a founder of the Allied Dental Programs at A-B Tech Community College. In 1998, the North Carolina Dental Society presented Dr. Mynatt their most prestigious award, The Distinguished Service Scroll in recognition of his many years of outstanding service, dedication and leadership to the profession of Dentistry and for his contributions toward improving health. A Fellow in the International College of Dentists, Dr. Mynatt served as Chairman of the North Carolina section in 1977-1981. A Fellow in the American College of Dentists, he served as Chairman of the North Carolina-South Carolina sections in 1986-1987. Dr. Mynatt served as President of the Buncombe County Dental Society; President of the North Carolina First District Dental Society; the Board of Trustees of the North Carolina Dental Society and the Dental Foundation Board of Directors, University of North Carolina School of Dentistry, Chapel Hill. Active in the American Dental Association, he served on the ADA House of Delegates, 1981- 1990 and on the ADA Council on Ethics, By-Laws and Judicial Affairs, 1986-1989. He was a member of the Academy of Operative Dentistry, the Academy of General Dentistry, The Pierre Fauchard Academy, an associate member of the Chicago Dental Society and a fellow in the Academy of Dentistry International. Dr. Mynatt was an active member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a Deacon and an Elder. He served on the Board of Trustees, Asheville Country Day School. He was a long-time member of the Asheville Civitan Club and the North Carolina chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. He served as Chief of Staff of the Rhododendron Royal Brigade of Guards and was a member of the Knights of the Laurel. He was also a member of the Biltmore Forest Country Club. Dr. Mynatt is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lee; his son, William A. Mynatt, Jr. and his wife, Fayre of Lake Forest, IL; two daughters, Rebecca M. George of Greenwich, CT and Anne M. Neikirk and her husband, Jeffrey of Atlanta, GA; his seven grandchildren, Thomas Heymar George, Mark William George, William Atchley Mynatt, III (Wade), George McDonnell Mynatt, Henry Crockett Mynatt, Sarah Elizabeth Neikirk and Joseph Randolph Neikirk (Jay); two sisters, Edna M. Garrison, Knoxville, Tennessee and Judith M. Bush and her husband, Phillip of Gainesville, Georgia. A memorial service and celebration of the life of William Mynatt will be held Saturday, May 4th at 11:00am at First Presbyterian Church, 40 Church Street, Asheville with The Rev. Mark Burnham, The Rev. Margaret Torrence and The Rev. E. Morgan Gardner officiating. The family will receive friends in Gardner Hall immediately following the service.
