Mildred Wofford Dixon drew her last breath on July 5, 2014, age 93. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Samuel W. Dixon, Sr. (1976), and her son, the Rev. Samuel W. Dixon, Jr. (2010). Surviving are her three daughters, Jane Basista and husband Gerry, Marie Hein, and Mildred Lee Dixon; daughters-in-law, Cindy Dixon and Susan DelGrande; nine grandchildren, Amelia Basista, Anna Basista, Alison Basista, Christy Dixon, Amy Dixon, Mason Hein, Savannah Hein, Josh McMurtrey, and Molly Spearman; and three great-grandchildren, Casey Burroughs, Hannah Dixon, and Madeline Basista. Mrs. Dixon was born in the Friendly City of Athens, TN on October 25, 1920. She told a delightful story of how she came to be delivered: she was flying with the stork over Athens and spotted a family having dinner. She thought they looked nice, so the stork delivered her to Oma and Emmons Wofford. Mrs. Dixon enjoyed telling many entertaining stories of her childhood. Mrs. Dixon attended the University of Tennessee, Memphis, where she earned her RN. She served as an Army nurse during WWII. While in the VA Hospital in Oteen, NC, she met Sam Dixon, and stated, "that's the man I'm going to marry". On August 10, 1944, she did just that. Mrs. Dixon worked in hospitals in NC and SC during her career, and retired at age 70. She enjoyed traveling, playing Scrabble, bridge, and working puzzles in the newspaper. She loved to sing, and joined her daughters in song even at the end of life. She loved to sit on her porch swing and look at the trees, the birds, and the sunset. Mrs. Dixon had a good life and was loved. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday at Trinity United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Rodney H. Hagans, Jr., officiating. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Trinity United Methodist Church, 587 Haywood Rd., Asheville, NC 28806. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family.
