Clara Gasperson Mehaffey, 84, passed away unexpectedly Friday, August 29, 2014.
Mrs. Mehaffey was a native of Buncombe County and was a daughter of the late George C. and Mada Lamb Gasperson.
She was a Patents and Trademark Paralegal for Akzo-Nobel and she was an active and dedicated member of West Asheville Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School, sang in the choir, and served on many committees.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband of 64 years, Coy R. Mehaffey, and a sister, Ruth Morgan.
Coy and Clara traveled extensively throughout the world, including mission trips to Ukraine, Russia and Spain.
Funeral services will be at 12:00 noon Wednesday at West Asheville Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Stan Welch and the Rev. Tony Hooper officiating. Interment will follow at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m until 12:00 Wednesday at the church.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Building Fund of West Asheville Baptist Church, 926 Haywood Road, Asheville, NC 28806.

So very sorry to see that Clara passed away, I was so looking forward to helping U with that party for her that U had planned, I always enjoyed the visits here at the flower shop from the 2 of you. Such sweet folks, I will miss her….

Coy now Clara is having the greatest Birthday ever with our Savior. Just imagine how many Angles are getting her ready for the party. Just remember she will always be with you as your guarding Angle. While this is a most joyous time for Clara and even for you when you consider her eternal life in Heaven, we know, too, that for you and friends and family still here there is great pain of loss. Dear Coy, Jim & I were so sorry to hear of Clara’s death. My time working with you at American Enka and knowing Clara through you are very pleasant memories which I will always remember. Please accept our sympathy and know our prayers and thoughts are with you at this difficult time.
Coy, we want to express to you how devastated we are to learn of the loss of precious Clara. It has been many years since we have seen you (since we moved to Greenville SC in 2005). We remember her as that sweet presence in our Sunday School class at WBAC! We all have the joy of knowing we will certainly see her again in the near future and for that we rejoice.
