Muriel Horbett Smith, 74, of Asheville, passed away on Sunday, January 31, 2016, at her residence. Born in Jersey City, NJ, to the late John E. Horbett, Jr. and Anne Kelly Horbett, she retired as a Tax Accountant. Other than her parents she is preceded in death by a daughter, Sharon Taylor and brother, John Horbett. Survivors include her husband, Ripp Smith; son, Raymond L. Jones; daughters Nicole Mischler and Robin Monti; brothers, James Horbett and Sean Horbett, and sister, Junice Kulick; six grandchildren and two great grandchildren. A funeral service will be held Saturday, February 6, at 2:00 p.m. in the Tunnel Road chapel of Groce Funeral Home, Rev. Father Patrick Cahill officiating. The family will receive friends after the service.

  1. Ripp – I am so sorry to hear of Muriel’s passing. She was a wonderful GAL and we appreciated her straight-talk in her reports to the court. We will miss her.

  2. Even though, I never had the opportunity to meet Muriel, I feel like I knew her, from all the stories, Junice has shared. I will continue to pray for your family as you deal with the loss of this wonderful loving women. We have been praying for her healing but, the Great Healer of all is now taking wonderful care of her and continuing to love her for your family.

  3. I met Muriel through GAL when she took over a case of mine. She saw it to a successful end and cared a great deal for the children. Muriel always had a big welcoming smile on her face. I will miss seeing her. My condolences go to the family.

  6. My condolences to Bambi’s family, who shared so generously of her spirit at the funeral this afternoon. I knew Bambi from our work at the Buncombe County Detention Center, helping women struggling with addiction. She was so faithful with her time and talent. It was a pleasure to get to know her over the years.
