  1. We are so sorry for Homer’s homegoing (not for him, of course, that is the hope of all in Christ) but for your family. It’s been a very difficult path for and with him for several years now and the emotions in your hearts must be quite strong and conflicted between the promise of glory and the vacancy left. Kelly and I are praying intently for you all l. We will unfortunately not be able to be present at the funeral; we plan on leaving Friday for what for me is the semblance of a vacation. We are burdened by not being there to show your sweet family how much we love you. We hope that you know that and will forgive our absence. We pray that as the Gospel is proclaimed and praises are sung (both of which are nearer to Homer’s heart even more now than before) that the Lord allow you to glimpse reunion and rejoice even as you sorrow.

  2. Dennis, we are so sorry for the loss of your father. Praying for you and the family during this difficult time. Pete & Mary Helen Henley

  3. Thurman family,
Brother Homer is certainly experiencing the joys of Heaven that he and Mrs Margaret sung about for many years. He loved his music as he loved the LORD. Please know that we love each one of you and are praying for you. Pastor Dennis, Teresa, Ronnie, Mary and I have also lost our Dads, we know your grief. But he is waiting for y’all, telling the Heavenly choir what he would like to sing. GOD Bless you, we love you.

  17. Dear Margret and family I can’t imagine the grief and heart broken memories you must be feeling this morning, I was picturing Homer at Jesus feet and he is now singing in Gods choir, my mom thought the world of you both and always ask for you two to sing at her final services, please know that he will not be forgot, as well as the rest of your family I will continue you all in our prayers.

  18. May the loving God of the visible and invisible creation shelter you Homer Thurman and comfort your hurting family members and grieving friends who’ve lost your physical presense. Like so many who knew you I share their profound sense of loss.

I knew Homer Thurman from the early 1970’s into the early 1980’s as a hard working father, a loving husband for Margaret and a devoted friend who was deeply blessed with a God given ability to sing and with a talent that I can only describe as amazing. Having experienced his talent up close and the privilege of singing with this man in a gospel quartet while a young man his gift for conveying the gospel in song just can\’t be overstated. I’m flooded with so many precious memories of our brief time together and the fellowship that we shared in churches and just hanging out with our families at restaurants and in each others homes.

I also remember Homer deftly juggling the responsibilities of a family, his job and making daily pilgrimages to a nursing home near Fletcher, NC to personally shave his disabled father who\’d suffered serious cognitive impairment due to an incurable, degenerative disease. But I especially remember the tenderness in Homers\’ voice whenever he described that act of shaving his father which he considered a responsibility and duty as a son and ones that he considered his distinct honor and privilege to fulfill.

In the winter of life now I reflect often upon those days and Homers’ kindness and friendship towards me as a young man, his willingness to sing whenever he was called upon, his singing and worship with Margaret, his laughter and most memorably his singing. I probably will until the day I too lay down the mantle of life and like so many before me cross the chasm of death.

You’ve run your final race Homer and will be missed like crazy by all your family and friends and those of us who cling stubbornly to the audacious promises made by a Galilean preacher long ago that we\’d meet again to live, laugh and sing together in a place of immeasurable joy and profound beauty where there\’s no more sorrow, disappointments or pain. Until that daybreak dear friend rest in peace!

  19. You all are in our thoughts and prayers. Mrs. Thurman you will never know how you and Mr. Thurman has blessed our hearts from singings at Bethel Baptist Church and listening to your record. Our family also sang ‘Homecoming Day’ and ‘It will be worth it all’. Love you all!!

  40. Margaret and family. With each passing of our loved ones we all can remember the memories we shared with them. I, as well, have great memories of teaching Homer how to read music and our times of sharing the Lord at Asheville Music Supply. The beautiful songs he has left for us to enjoy will help us share the praises of our Lord for years to come. My life was enriched by knowing such a God-fearing man.
