Barbara Jean Wilkes, 82, of Asheville, died Wednesday, February 21, 2018.
A native of Asheville, Barbara was a daughter of the late Walter Lee Rhodes and Ethel Swan Rhodes Shirlin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Orville W. Wilkes, and her sister, Evelyn Walker.
Mrs. Wilkes worked as a cook for the Ben Lippen school for 18 years, and she attended Emma Baptist Church.
Surviving are her daughters, Sonya Chaffins (Will) and Karlya Buckner (James); sons, Allan Turbyfill, Gregory Turbyfill, and Keith Turbyfill (Suzanne); 17 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; sister, Louise Hoover; and brothers, Walter Rhodes, Jr., and Donald Rhodes.
Graveside services will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday at Gashes Creek Cemetery.
Her family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Friday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave., prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St Jude Pl., Memphis, TN 38105.
Our thought and prayers are with you all during this time of grief. We pray that you will find peace within and comfort in knowing that Barbara is resting in the arms of the angels and she will suffer no more.

Sorry to hear of Barbara Jean’s passing, Ann Rhodes-Mull sent me the newspaper clipping of her obituary. She was a very special lady, when i was young and Gene was stationed at Alameda Naval base, she was always very special to me. My condolences to all of her family.
