Horace Alvin Marlowe, 86, of Fairview, died on Sunday, June 3, 2018, at Memorial Mission Hospital. A Fairview native, Horace was a son of the late Alonzo and Nellie Bass Marlowe. He was also preceded in death by his parents-in-law, Horace and Beatrice Wheelon Moore; brothers, Roy, Johnson (Christine), Paul (Faye), Leslie (Gladys), Charles and A.G. "Butch" Marlowe; sisters, Mary McBrayer (R.L.) and Martha Godley (John Briggs and Fred Godley); and nephews, Roger Briggs and Bruce Briggs. Mr. Marlowe proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Mr. Marlowe earned the Purple Heart Medal for his sacrifices. His family would like to give their thanks to the Charles George VA Medical Center for the excellent care they provided for 37 years. Mr. Marlowe was a committed lifelong member of Nesbitt's Chapel United Methodist Church. Upon retirement from his work as a contractor, Mr. Marlowe was called to the mission field, completing 70 short-term mission trips. He traveled all over the world ( including Africa, Europe and Central America) building churches, schools, and facilities for feeding programs and medical services. Mr. Marlowe is survived by his wife, Betty Moore Marlowe, with whom he would've shared their 64th wedding anniversary on June 8; daughter, Sharon Weynand and husband David, son, Horace, Jr. "Bud" and wife Ruth; and daughter, Kathy Marlowe; grandchildren, Bryan Weynand (Shannon), Joni Slagle (Brad), Scott Weynand (Kelly), Nikki Marlowe and Luke Horace Marlowe; great-grandson, Jake Slagle; sister, Sarah Cauble (Ken); sister-in-law, Marcia Marlowe, Alma Marlowe, Shirley Ray (Tommy); sister and brother-in-law, Jim and Frances Dill; and numerous special nieces and nephews. The funeral service for Mr. Marlowe will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday at Nesbitt's Chapel UMC. Pastors Glenda Hayner and Don Farris will officiate. Interment with military honors provided by the North Carolina National Guard Honor Guard will follow in the church cemetery. His family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. prior to the service in the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Missions of Nesbitt's Chapel UMC, 50 Kirpatrick Lane, Fairview, NC 28730, or to Hearts for Heaven, Inc., P.O. Box 44022, Columbus, OH 43204. Groce Funeral Home on Patton Ave. is assisting the family.

  1. Dear Betty and all the family, Hold your heads up high. The Lord God Almighty has called Horace home so that he may hear the words ‘Well Done MY Good And Faithful Servant’ graduation day has arrived. Take great comfort in knowing you will see him again soon, I’m looking for us all to go up anytime. You all have good memories and this entire community will miss him. He’s not gone on, he’s only gone on ahead, we will be right behind him! Prayers, hugs, and love to you all.

  3. He was a father to me when I needed one, a young single woman hours from her own family. His kindnesses and acceptance of me remain etched in my soul. God bless all of you as you learn to live without this wonderful man.

    I was so saddened to hear of dear Horace’s passing. Horace was a wonderful, Godly man and I am honored to have known him as a friend and a neighbor. I will always cherish memories of him and his fine work, both in mission trips and all the homes he and the Marlowe family built for others, my home included.
