Born in:
Buncombe Co., NC
Resided in:

Gail Blankenship Waddell, 77, entered her heavenly home Sunday, January 26, 2020. She passed away peacefully in her sleep at Heritage Hills Memory Care facility, her home for the last year. Her battle with Alzheimer’s finally at it’s end. Greeting her at Heaven’s gate were her loving husband, KK Waddell, her parents, Frank and Helen Blankenship and her sister, Carol Johnson.
Gail is survived by her children, daughter, Sandy Jones, of Asheville, and her husband Greg and his son, Dexter, son, Dr. K. Gary Waddell, of Pacifica CA; special grandson, Jason Waddell, whom she loved as her own, and his wife, Mary, of Mason MI; granddaughter, Melissa Ingle, of Asheville, her loving caretaker of several years with whom she shared her home; her brother, Frank Blankenship and wife, Mary, of Morristown TN; her special aunt “Phibby,” Phyllis Gardner, of Asheville; her lifelong friend, Terry Dotson, who helped her walk this difficult path; and several much loved nieces and nephews, cousins and countless friends.
Gail retired after 32 years of service with Asheville City Schools. In her retirement, she volunteered for several years at The Baptist Resource Center. Gail lived in the Beaverdam Community her entire life. She was a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church where she produced years of Christmas productions, Bible Schools, Sunday school classes, serving her church in any and all capacities, even directing weddings. The lives she touched through her beloved church are immeasurable.
Although free from the ravages of Alzheimer’s for that we are thankful, our world is a dimmer place and our pain is not lessened. We are blessed to know her legacy of love and service will live on forever.
Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 29, at Beaverdam Baptist Church, with the Rev. Kelvin Moseley officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Wednesday at the church, prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation in Gail’s memory to The Alzheimer’s Association, Western Carolina Chapter, 4600 Park Rd., Suite 250, Charlotte, NC 28209, in hopes that one day a cure is found and no family endures it’s torture.
We leave you with mom’s legacy summed up by one of her favorite Bible passages; “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow us all the days of our lives and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.” Psalm 23.

What a precious lady heaven has gained.
Gail was a beautiful person. Always so pleasant to be around. I know you will miss her but having experienced this disease first hand – I am sure you have missed the “real” Gail for the past several months. So thankful she is no longer suffering and thankful the next time you see her all things will have become new as she has been set free of this horrible disease. Prayers for the family.
Sandy again I am so very sorry for your loss. I know heaven is a much brighter place with her there and that precious smile she had. I hope God surrounds you with his arms and love during your time of sorrow .
My deepest sympathy is extended to all of Gail’s family at this time of sorrow. I worked with Gail in ACS for a long time. She was such a hard worker and always pleasant to be around. RIP dear friend.
Hi Gary
I just read about your mom in the paper.
I’m so sorry for your loss. Please know I am thinking of you.
Gail, a beautiful, kind, and loving person. Loved the Lord Jesus, and faithfully shared the good news with others. Praying the Lord’s comfort for all of you – during, and beyond this season.
Went to grace , david millard , lee edwards with Gail . Always remember pleasant spirit , beautiful smile , good listener and sometimes thought she was born a christian . Anytime I visited Beaverdam church she was teaching a sunday school class and always encouraging us to keep on following Christ . She supported jane and me in missionary work for many years and know her prayers and intercession carried us through many spiritual battles in our personal lives to continue to confess our sins and be filled with His Holy Spirit . Her family is blessed to have a mature Saint in Christ as a example to follow . We celebrate her resurrection and excitement of being with Jesus forever . alan butch brock
I was so sad to see where she had passed away. She was always one of my favorite cousins. More like a sister from when we lived with them. Thoughts and prayers to all the family. Love Susan
My condolences on the loss of your sweet mother. I had the opportunity to work with her when I worked at the Central Office. We lift prayers of strength and comfort for your family.
As Gail’s family most likely none of you know me. Gail was a part of my Sunday School group many years ago when we lived in Beaverdam. To me Gail was one of the most precious lady’s I have ever met. I was so disappointed when I saw that she had passed Our loss and heavens gain. We all know where Gail is today. So sorry for your loss.
