Born in: Milledgeville, GA
Resided in: Candler, NC

Mick Barrett Chandler, 22, of Candler, NC, passed away Sunday, February 2, 2020.

Born June 12, 1997, in Milledgeville, GA, Mick was a son of Bob and Linda Chandler.

Mick was a senior at Western Carolina University and was planning a career in the Marines.

Mick was a scholar. He was an avid reader, a critical thinker, and had an inquiring mind. He loved talking about what he learned and, although he had strong personal opinions, Mick always was interested in hearing what others had to say.

Mick was an athlete and outdoorsman. Most recently he developed a passion for strength training. Hours in the gym led to new personal records. His enthusiasm for lifting was contagious and others often sought him out for his advice.

Mick had a flare for humor and if Mick was in the room everyone was laughing. But even bigger than his smile was his big heart. He loved his family dearly and talked to them daily. He also was devoted to his close friends. If anyone ever needed him, Mick was there.

Although his passing leaves a void that can never be filled, memories of Mick will forever enrich our lives.

In addition to his parents, Mick is survived by his brothers, Dane Wilson, Brett O’Neal, and Christopher Chandler

Private services are planned.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Semper Fi Fund (semperfifund.org).

Memories Timeline

Guestbook

  1. Linda and Bob, we love you! My favorite memory of Mickey is this summer when we were going on a walk and I hadn’t seen him for months. I tried to grab his hand and he said, “Bring it on in here”, and hugged me. We’ve never seen him not smiling❤️

  2. Linda and Bob, We are heartbroken to hear about Mick . He was always the sweetest little blond headed boy. I never saw him without a smile on his face. Thank you for letting him be a part of our family’s lives when he and Jonathan we growing up. We have a lot of fond memories of the two of them together.
    Love and prayers.

  3. Bob, Linda, Dane and Brett- I am hurting so much for your sweet family. Lily and I have such good memories of our times meeting up to play at the parks and going over to your house to hang out. I still make your spinach and walnut pesto. I always think of Mickey, or as Morgan mispronounced it, “Ickey”, as having long, light blonde hair and a big smile. He got along and played so well with everyone. I can’t tell you how often I wish to go back to those happy, simpler times. Sending lots of love your way. -Ginger

  4. We are praying for all of you! Mick was such a sweet kind young man. So sad to hear the news. Many memories of Mick are being shared by BHS students, faculty and friends.

  5. Linda, Bob, Dane, and Brett. My heart breaks for all of you. Your family has always been special to us. Mick was the sweetest child. He was always smiling and telling jokes. We had a wonderful second-grade year. Linda, I got out the scrapbook you made for me. Those pictures brought back such fond memories. We are sending love and prayers. Randy and Susan

  6. I pray for peace and comfort for you all during this time. It was an honor to know Mick and to be able to call him one of my best friends growing up. He always had a smile on his face and always knew how to brighten someone’s day. I’ll forever cherish the memories that we all made through the years. Never forgotten and forever in our hearts!

  7. To the Chandlers,
It is so difficult to process that such a heartfelt tragedy could happen to such a loving family. I have fond memories of your family taking such a huge role at Creekside Elementary. I had the pleasure of teaching two of your boys. They were always smart, respectful, and fun loving.
So to you I say trust God to get you through the most difficult time in your lives. Grief has so time limit. I send my love and condolences to you. I will keep your family in my prayers. Thinking of Mr. & Mrs. Chandler💙, Dane💙Brett💙Mick💙, and Chris💙

From the time Will was very young I thought, “if I can raise a child with half the beautiful soul” of these boys, I will consider myself blessed.” The world is so much something less without Mick. I am so incredibly sorry for your loss and we will be holding you close in our thoughts.

  28. My family sends our deepest sympathies to your entire family during this terrible time. We enjoyed getting to know Mick when he came to watch our Zac play football, and then we he came down to visit Jake & Zac. He recently was here for weekend just a few weeks ago. Mick always had everyone laughing, and was such a GREAT kid, with such strong goals and warm heart for everyone. I can’t imagine your pain, and I hope your memories will bring your comfort in the long days and weeks ahead. Our boy loved Mick like a brother, and he was a delight to be in our home.

  29. It’s hard to put into words just how much Mickey meant to me, our friends and everyone else he came into contact with. He was my brother and will forever be in my heart. Mr. and Mrs. Chandler, my heart breaks for your loss. Rest In Peace Mick, we love you.

  32. I’m so sorry for yalls loss!! I just heard about this and it broke my heart mickey always knew how to make people smile and be happy I worked with him over the summer and became very close friends with mick.. I still honestly cant believe this I consider him one of my best friends

  33. Mick made the world brighter, funnier, and better. Thankful to have met him at BHS and have even just a few memories to share.

  34. Trying to put into words what is found in our hearts, and where to begin. Drew and Riley grew up right alongside Dane, Brett, and Mick. For that matter, I grew up right alongside you, Linda. The exploring and adventures we shared together daily were so special to our entire family. Your family was our family. Mick was such a special boy because of the world you created for him. You gave him the space to grow and wonder, and I can just see him with that light that always surrounded him, that gigantic smile and all that blonde hair…and if I’m not mistaken boots and a red cowboy hat (although I know that was a favorite of Brett’s too). The dirt, the games, the nothing but all boy play from our crews. We are so grateful for the time you shared loving our family and for the time we were given to love your family, too. To say how sorry we are for you all cannot adequately express how deep that sorrow goes. While it’s been many years now, it was only just yesterday. And those are the memories we will hold forever in our hearts and minds. We will always, always love you. Don, Julie, Drew, and Riley

  35. I am very sorry to hear of Mick’s passing. I remember the birthday party at your house, making ice cream. He had that pretty blond curly hair. He brought a smile to class everyday. He had a thirst for knowledge, he enjoyed reading immensely. He got along with everyone! It was my pleasure to be his first grade teacher. He touched so many lives and we are the better for having been fortunate enough to have spent quality time with him. Please know I am praying for your entire family and his many friends. Rest Star Student.

  37. Sweet Mick…..a smile that would light up any room. Oh how blessed I am to have been able to be his 4th grade teacher. I have thought a lot about those sweet memories over the past two days. The best project I have ever done in my years of teaching came from the Chandler family and Aunt Lisa. Such a sweet family. I wish you all were closer by during this time, but know that you all are in my thoughts and prayers. Much love to you all!!!

  38. There aren’t adequate words to ease the loss of your beautiful boy. The many sentiments expressed here make it clear that Mickey has been a bright light all of his too-short life. During the time we spent with him, he was funny, warm, considerate, and kind. He was a caring and compassionate friend when those qualities were needed most. Though it is most bittersweet, Emerson’s quote about success fits quite well: ” . . . to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded. . . ” There is much to celebrate about Mick’s life and those of us fortunate to know him will cherish every memory. We’ll hold him fast in our hearts always. Peace, Ruth

  39. He was the light of my classroom that I can still remember after so many years. Always had a smile on his face and a joke on his mind. He was a friend to everyone. RIP

  40. My heart is broken for this family. There are no words. My daughter, McKayla was Mick’s classmate and I remember what a wonderful, fun guy he was and sweet and adoring his mom was. May you somehow find peace going forward.

As you hold each other close know that you are in my heart and may you find peace today and the days ahead.

  43. Mick was a very bright star in the room. I am beyond thankful that I got to know him and you Linda. The overnight trip to Savannah at the UGA center. That weekend the adults and kids had such fun. Watching Mick grow was amazing. He never could turn down that smile of his!!! For him to keep
Julia and Brandon out of trouble in class was full time. Every time I would see him he always had a hug and catch me up on what all you guys had been doing, Prayers for all of you on this very hard journey. I promise Mick will never be forgotten bc he impacted ALOT of people. We love you guys.

  44. Mickey was a true light in my life in his time at WCU. There was never a time when there wasn’t a smile on his face – and he was the most beautiful soul. From a spontaneous camping trip, hiking to the beautiful Paradise Falls, and lake days when it was warmer out… I will forever cherish the memories I have with Mick. My heart is broken. I pray for healing in the days, weeks and months to come. He will always be in my heart.

  45. Dear Chandler Family, I am so very sorry for your loss. Your Mick was a bright spot in this universe. He will never be forgotten.

The McGill family sends our love and prayers to you. Please know that Mick will always hold a special place in our hearts. With time, may you find peace.

  50. Bob, Linda, Brett, Dane and Christopher my Family and I send our Sincere Condolences. It was always a pleasure to see Mick or Brett come to Bob’s office in the GCSU Biology Dept. this gave me the opportunity to interact with them both for a few years. Mick had a special smile with a glow in his eyes that was always present, kind hearted and such a respectful young man. Mick’s intelligence and desire to complete his academic goals were evident. It was obvious to me that Mick was a born leader, yet he was so humble. Bob and Linda I Thank you for allowing me in your lives as friends for I so enjoyed being around such a close loving family. I pray that the lifetime of fond loving memories of Mick will become a blanket of comfort. I will always cherish my memories of Mick and never forget him, he was so very special.

  51. Mick was always one who would be there for anyone, even those he didn’t know. He will be greatly missed.

  52. We have fond memories of Mick (with his brothers) coming over and helping us work in our backyard) – he was always so willing and even happy to help. He always left us feeling cheerful than when they arrived.

  53. Dear Bob, Linda and family – please accept our sincerest condolences for the loss of Mick … our whole family is praying for your family.

Bill and Jeanne, Jennifer, Ginger and Billy

  54. Was first department dinner in fall of 99 I think, that I first saw Mick, playing ball with his brothers in your backyard, as I smiled at their abandon and happiness, and as I slowly realized where I was standing in sandals.

Still a happy memory, fire ants and all.

Karynne and I send our deepest sympathies.

  55. Micky was one of those guys that you will always remember. He changed my life. I’ll always miss sitting in his living room listening to him first learn to play the guitar. My deepest condolences and prayers to his family. Any one who was close with him knew he was a mommas boy.

  56. Bob and Linda , Dane and Brett, My Condolences, he was such a pleasure meeting!! My prayers and thoughts 🙏 with your loving family ❤️ Nancy and Ken’s sister in law, Huntsville,Al

  57. One of my favorite memories with Mick was one of the first times we ever actually hung out. He and I went to a coffee shop for a “quick” lunch which turned into 3.5 hours of consistent conversation, laughs, and deep talks. Mickey was always good company. He is the best conversationalist, owned a smile that lit up any room, and had an ability to make any friend feel like family. Of all the memories I have with Mickey, it’s always the talks that seem to hold a place in my heart.
I send all the love and prayers that I can to you all.

  58. Dear Bob and Linda, On behalf of Janet, Bill, and Lenore, I extend our sympathy in this time of grief. We were greatly saddened to hear of your loss. I have informed cousin Rowena of the Groce website as she was quite concerned that she was unable to send condolences, so you may hear from her as well. Best wishes to all your family.

  59. I don’t know the family at all and I’m sorry this is many months after, but as we get back into winter, I find myself looking at the wall in my house that Mickey helped put up when his dear friend, my boyfriend at the time, had hurt his shoulder and had no way to put up the boarding to insulate us for the winter. Mickey did not hesitate to be outside that night cutting and measuring in the cold to put this wall up to keep our newborn baby girl warm. I’m crying as I remember this sweet sweet man who I only spoke with a handful of times. I also worked with him at bear lake, and he always popped in the greeter’s cottage to see how my pregnant self at the time was doing. I can’t express how deeply I respected his kindness and generosity toward everyone he met, even people like me that he barely knew. There are people that pass on in life and some hit harder than others. I think about Mickey’s passing and it’s definitely one of the hardest deaths to hit me in my life, even though we were just acquaintances. I watched my boyfriend grieve one of his best friends and I grieved with him because I truly don’t think we’ll ever meet another soul as bright, or a truer friend as Mickey Chandler. He was a living representation of “Agape” love. I just wanted to express to the family my condolences and maybe just to tell a story about him that would make them proud. If he can impact someone like me after only having met him a few times, I cannot fathom how many people’s hearts he touched and how much he meant to those closest to him. I’m truly blessed to have met him in this life.
